If you watch enough cooking shows, they all salt their pasta water. It really does make it tasty without any sauce. I also add olive oil when making rice.
When my wife was in culinary school, one of her teachers talked about how he broke up with his girlfriend one time over a picnic lunch. The topic that derailed their romantic was meal was the reason for salting pasta water. The girlfriend swore it was for temperature, and the chef said it was for taste. I thought that was a crazy argument, but I guess they weren't the only two to argue over that particular subject.
