Sony let go of many (~50) developers from their Santa Monica division. It seems most/all of them were working on a new project from Stig Asmussen, who was the director for God of War 3. He was working on a new IP, but it looks like Sony didn't really care for it.

Possibly putting more effort into the next God of War game.

I found yesterday's article on Ars regarding the Wii/DS server shutdown to be a pretty interesting take on the discussion we had here on Clutchfans 6 months ago about digital distribution vs physical media.

I was happy to note that when I last booted up my 3DS several weeks back (I've been pretty occupied with Path of Exile and Fifa 14), and went to download a game off the eShop, I was met with a prompt to link my 3DS account with my WiiU's account. I guess this is a precursor to Iwata's announcement that Nintendo is finally moving to account-based management of digital content, instead of their draconian method of tying digital games to hardware (or... is it already done?).

Still leaves me with the question of how my digital content on my Wii is going to be handled... if ever. Since my understanding is that even if I do a system transfer to my WiiU, my Wii dashboard is run in a sort of virtualized environment... so will there actually be record that I purchased my copies of Fluidity, World of Goo, and the Phoenix Wright games? Hmm...

 

It's something that I'm a bit concerned about. These companies ask you to invest in a system or a game....if they then decide to shut down servers and make games unplayable, that's just not good enough if you ask me.

We would all have older systems we play at some point. You'd hate to find that all it takes is for a developer to go bust to render a great game useless all of a sudden.

 

Yup, and that's basically what happened with Monster Hunter Tri not even a year ago. The company didn't even "go bust," they just shut down the servers because they could.

Capcom shut down the Monster Hunter Tri servers, which not only eliminated multiplayer... it actually eliminated roughly 60% of the single-player game. This is because the multi-player "Port" section acted as a gate to the late-game content... so if you can't connect to a server, you can't access the port, so you can't play *any* high-level quests anymore.

Thus the game became more of a long demo disc, featuring 40% of a game, than the actual game that's advertised on the box.

It's worth noting that in the case above, the servers were shut down only 3 years after the release of the game.

Things like this should give people pause. It's a definite consumer rights issue. Even if you argue that the click-wrap agreement you signed upon first accessing the service said (somewhere) that the servers wouldn't last forever... that doesn't help some kid's mom walking into a Gamestop and pulling Monster Hunter Tri off the wall. She has literally no way of knowing that game is now a glorified demo disc. This is an extreme case of this occurring only 3 years from release... but if it happens 10 years from release, does that make it any more okay?
