Barry Goldwater (conservative) and Rand Paul (libertarian) both want/wanted to repeal civil rights act.

You are confusing indivudals with the general trend. I can find liberals who buck the traditional left wing narrative. For example Bill Maher and Islam.

not just individuals. Very prominent individuals who most would consider quintessential conservatives. I chose them for a reason. But if you wish to find me some polls on what people who self describe as 'conservative' believe then go for it. I hate polls for the most part, but ill at least look.

I could of shown Milton Friedman advocating legalizing drugs and Thomas Sowell advocating education voucher systems. These are fairly common Conservative positions.

I also chose them because durvasa claimed I was describing neoconsevatism and not traditional conservatism . I wanted to show that's incorrect. Conservatives have always supported small government, so their stances on the above issues are obvious.

When it comes down to **** that matters at the state and local level, Republicans are far more pro private prison/law enforcement when not comes to handling drug issues than Democrats.

You want to selectively pick prominent Republicans then why can't I choose the Republican who arguably started the trend of treating drug addiction as a crime, Reagan?

I'm not committed to any particular definition of conservatism. Perhaps I'm attaching to much importance to the voices of so-called "social conservatives". I'm more interested in reaching a common understanding on what the terms mean, because otherwise its impossible to carry on useful discussion on these sort of topics.

How about we just go by what the American Conservative Union describes as its belief system? I'm good with that, allowing for the fact that in reality an individual who considers himself conservative doesn't necessarily check all of these boxes.

I think the way you were presenting conservatism is a closer match to the above description than what I was saying. Very well. :)

Just to clarify, I wasn't talking asking if there were comedians that vote republican. My question was why aren't there republican leaning comedians who discuss politics in their acts.

Maybe because crowds that go to comedy clubs skew younger, and they tend to be liberal?

I think the number one job of any comedian is to get his audience to laugh. It's generally much harder to get someone to laugh at a joke that challenges their own beliefs.

You can claim that as much as you want, but that is not what a modern american conservative is. Conservatives/Republicans TODAY are not for small government and not for social freedoms (live or let live does not apply at all)

Conservative and Libertarian are NOT the same thing.

South Park is a libertarian show (matt and trey are self-described Libertarians) but it certainly is not conservative

Nobody said they were. Just that they agree on issues concerning freedom and the economy.

Most the political view points expressed in South Park are conservative and libertarian since these groups agree on so many things this is possible (for example the south park movie is certainly libertarian and conservative). Team America would be something I would call Libertarian and not Conservative.

Mike Judge is very conservative if people want another comedic name (though not stand up). Silicon Valley would certainly be libertarian and conservative.

Libertarian is only a wing of the conservatives in the US, they are not the majority of the conservatives. Most of the self claimed conservatives are not libertarians and they are for Yuge defense budget and enforcing Christian values in the US. They are only for small government when it comes to social services and other things they do not agree with.

Libertarians are not a subset of conservatives.

That is true, but most libertarians vote Republicans more than they vote Democrats, they do not even vote for Libertarians many times. :)

I think the problem most people have is that Libertarians are not necessarily Republicans but you don't find many Libertarians that aren't fiscally conservative. Some people use conservative and Republican interchangeably and that's a mistake, on numerous issues the Republicans are FAR from conservatives.

Hell, in many ways the Libertarians are closer to being a conservative party than the Republicans.

I agree with you. So, please write to Governor Abbott and Lt Governor Dan Patrick and remind them what a conservative is.
