They are the also the side of the aisle against the Civil Rights Act, affirmative action, against the Mosque in NY, support the repeal of the 14th ammendment, the immigration law in AZ, "they took er jobs!", etc. It's difficult not to lump them all in as racists though obviously they all can't be.
I think it's offensive when engaging in a debate on welfare that crack mothers or crack babies are brought up as examples of "Big Government" not working.
It is incorrect to say the GOP sent out that mailing when it was the Chaffey Community Republican Women that did it.
If conservatism were a car, racism would be oil. You could probably run it on something else, but it'd be a much tougher sell. And if you drill deep enough, you have more than you need.
It's too bad that immigrant hispanic and muslim families usually carry traditional Conservative values but are turned off by the us vs. them politics Republican leadership actively promotes. Apparently the tent is bigger with the bigots and loons than any potential future demographic shift. Maybe they're easier to control.
I never believe that all conservatives involved in their movement are racist but the problem is they don't distance themselves from it. When I see them condemn the people who rally with these signs that don't appear to be stage then I will believe. <a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/?action=view¤t=obamas-paladino-email.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/obamas-paladino-email.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/?action=view¤t=polls_michelle_obama_ape_2243_320570_poll_xlarge.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/polls_michelle_obama_ape_2243_320570_poll_xlarge.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/?action=view¤t=tea-kool-aid.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/tea-kool-aid.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/?action=view¤t=Tea-Party-Racist.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/Tea-Party-Racist.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/?action=view¤t=teapartysign1sm.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/teapartysign1sm.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/?action=view¤t=teapartyracism5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/notafaker/T%20party%20idiots/teapartyracism5.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
i think there are lots of white conservatives in the South who would be offended by the monkey crap. i don't know...i just think it's a huge generalization that's likely to be grossly unfair on an individual basis.
Don't mean to derail, but I'm in a band with two Africans (one from Ivory Coast, the other Nigeria) that both like posting Obama-as-a-Bushman pictures and tagging all their friends (including me) on FB in order to share them. The comments are usually in French or Yoruba -- but I think they find them amusing for a completely different reason. They really like Obama. My grandmother in Houston on the other hand, was never been as openly racist in my lifetime as she is now. She recently bought Palin's autobiography and said she would mortgage her home to support a campaign in 2012. She cancelled the Chronicle and says she's "careful" not to watch any news other than Fox, and listening to AM radio since "all the journalists are liberals and socialists who want to destroy our country." She refers to the president with more droppings of the N-bomb than Richard Pryor, but she carries pictures of her half black, half white great-grandchildren as defense of any racism, which will offend her greatly...but the rhetoric is full of incoherent rage. There are no ideas of her own for policy or critical insights. Just rage. I realize my grandmother may not represent ALL conservatives, but she is definitely "mainstream." She was a volunteer since Goldwater in the Houston area and was a secretary for Bush I for decades and was very active in Harris County and the state of Texas for the GOP for 60 years +. And she, like many of the Tea Party Wingnuts, assume that everyone they know agrees with them, because if we don't, we are obviously infected with the negro-commie-muslim virus and hate apple pie and Jesus and Gene Autry. She keeps asking me to register to vote abroad, because "we all have to work together to send real Americans to Washington." Imagine how she'd feel if she knew I played shows at the Israeli Communist Party...party. I feel ashamed for not engaging her, but I live 7,000 miles away and she's 84. It seems pointless and I don't need the stress. I suspect many of you deal with the same and are ashamed to admit it.
Of course it doesn't but that doesn't mean there aren't conservatives who are and conservative politicians and major figures who have played fast and loose with racism. As I've said before I think we are in new ground regarding our first non-white President. We have a grand tradition of criticizing our Presidents based on their personal backgrounds and appearance. The problem though is how do you do that with a black president without veering into racism.
Inheritance? Grandma is a Tea Partier. She doesn't believe in handouts. In a rare moment, I actually asked her for some help -- my business made a whole $800 last month and I'm worried about rent and bills. She said she'd pray for me.
No, but the bass player in my band, a college educated musician from Nigeria, is looking for a job that he can do from home, because Israelis won't hire him for anything more than manual labor. He's pretty hungry, and we don't have a paying gig until the 15th. Do you have a job for him?
You're in luck. I know someone who knows someone who has some trapped million dollar funds. And for a small $20,000 fee....
So far, the "conservatives" I've met raise families, work hard and many own businesses that employ fellow americans, play sports, jack off, fight with their spouse, drink an entire bottle of Jack Daniels, wake up and go back to work, don't live off welfare, etc. What the hell kind of track record are you looking for? How many times people that don't believe in a European style socialist govt **** up?
I have no idea what you are trying to say here. Also... What is a "European-style" socialist government? What other styles are there?
I'm trying to find out what the track record is, do you know? As far as what a European-style socialist government is, we can start with Greece.....would you like a breakdown of this and the different "styles" it manifests itself in but keep in mind it is the same old ****, but I can dress it up for you.
The track record of conservatives being a demographic of over 50 middle-aged white men afraid of change (particularly minorities in high positions of power other than as honorary tokens) is not an argument. This is the GOP's core demographic and they are marketing their product like any other business would, and doing a decent job, it appears. We can pretend that the Southern Strategy isn't the the GOP's "goto" move of the last 40 years, but Michael Steele doesn't : Most of the developed and semi-developed world is "socialist" in the sense that they have universal medical care and public transportation in their city centers subsidized by the taxpayer, but they also don't live on consumer credit, aren't upside down in mortgages they couldn't afford, don't buy a new car every few years with bank loans, and actually manage to save their money. I live in a "socialist" country and it is seeing good economic growth despite being in a constant state of war and having corrupt jackasses for leaders because its money policy is not loose and its people are healthy. If you want to talk about how much you hate social and economic equality, I'll be happy to debate you, just do it in another thread. Conservatism doesn't equal racism, but many conservatives are racists, and the tactics of the GOP to get people elected are designed to exploit racist discomfort in their base. Maybe those fears of the Other are deep-rooted and subconscious, but they are definitely there in the Tea Party rhetoric. You can butter it up and call it "state's rights" or "anti-socialism" but we know what it really means.
Howard Dean was right about the Democratic party needing to reach out to voters who displayed Confederate Flags. He was immediately attacked by other liberals for saying that, and was forced to apologize, but the ass whipping that Democrats are about to receive is an absolute vindication for Dean. You cannot systematically ridicule and attack an entire demographic and expect them to reconsider their positions. Just the opposite, actually.
