Ignoring all the other crap in the thread, this topic blew my mind. 10 years? 10 effin' years? Holy police state! We need constitutional and justice reform. Somewhere along the line we allowed the government to prosecute people based on what they think that we should or should not be doing. If we rebuilt the justice system on how much harm was done or could be done by an act, we would be far ahead - and Andymoon would be content as well. Taking Andymoon's favorite issue for example...another victimless crime that is haphazardly prosecuted in America. I was talking to a couple of friends of mine who happen to be white defense lawyers. I mentioned that when I am the head of NAACP, my first priority would be to legalize pot. They agreed with me completely that the main impact of anti-drug prosecution is the oppression of black people in society. Millions of people smoke pot in America - and are unconcerned about being caught with it. Hell, half the urban white professionals that I know smoke it. Of course the NAACP won't take on this issue because it is part of the power structure that polices and rules America. I know I don't really have a coherent point, but I'm just tired of it.
^ I agree that this seems to be a case of prosecuting without justice. That said I would be somewhat cautious of calling every case involving sex with and between minors a victimless crime. THere is a reason why statuatory rape is considered rape that even though a minor might be consenting there is a question whether they have the maturity to offer informed consent.
Yeah, but if the guy was black and yelled "black power" while he did it, he would have gotten 90 years. Luckily it wasn't a hate crime. If a white guy yells "white power" why committing a crime against a white person - is it a hate crime?
Isn't 17 years old still considered a minor in most cases other than perhaps murder? And if the statute (the old one) is that sex with a 14-15 year old is a misdemeanor, I don't understand why this guy got 10 years.
Because the South is fu*ked up, even though this could possibly have happened anywhere else. Moral, cultural and ethnic absolutism, with no shades of gray, and no political, legal or media community brave enough to question anything; and a populace whose great, great grandparents were hanging and barbecuing blacks on rumors and hearsay. Defacto third world countries, save for 2 1/2 centuries of intervention by "activist judges" and "outside agitators" on the behalf of individual rights. The taping is problematic, though; as every lonely, curious and morally ambiguous teenage boy within a twenty-mile radius would probably have a copy within a week.
I think it sucks that voters are willing to make an example out of these kids through support or inaction, while politicians are peddling these amendments to get themselves noticed and longer terms. I guess these geniuses think it'll be the final solution to enforce a draconian teen abstinence program.
This is ridiculous........the guy should get a "high five" not a jail sentence. If he is out on bail he should move to Canada.......no way he should spend even one minute in jail. In Europe and the rest of the civilized world this is not even an issue for the courts. DD
