Right. If there's one thing Americans are known for it's their lack of humor.

Richard Pryor, Mel Brooks, Will Ferrell, Bill Murray, George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, Steve Martin....

Who's the funniest Australian of all time? Jesus even Canada's funnier than Australia. At least they gave the world the Kids in the Hall.

So its a country v country thing. Have you left your own country? I was more relating to the overly-sensitive thing.

Sorry forum Police Officer, I am truly sorry to have said such things to someone you clearly respect. Like seriously, to think a few posts up I was being called overly-sensitive.

I am sorry for this thread, obviously the discussion can not be had in a legitimate manner and it has resulted in attacks upon countries, others sense of humor(like any person has the right to judge what others should find funny). Lock it up mods if you notice it.

Unless you are being a smartass, which would ironically make you the funniest man in Australia.

    It's a joke, mate.

Oh and yes I have left my own country. Just not to go to some pale(r) knockoff on the opposite side of the planet.

If people read Swift's "A Modest Proposal" and decide it really is a good idea to start eating Irish babies once they've plumped up a few pounds, then no, I don't blame Swift. I blame the imbeciles who don't get the joke.

On topic, though, I really don't see much of a distinciton between the "Jackson Jive" and a real life, traditional minstrel show. Non-black people paint themselves using outrageous exaggerations of black persons' physiognomies, then, separate from their usual personalities, jump around and act the fool to the wide guffaws of the audience.

How is this different than Al Jolson?

Or, since this is a reprisal from their performance twenty years ago (really, no one had ever realized blackface was reprehensible in the eighties?), how is this any different than Neil Diamond's revival of The Jazz Singer?

Parts of Mexico are quite nice. The Pacific Coast is particularly beautiful, and Mexico City has an amazing history. I found it to be the most interesting city on the North American Continent that I've been to (I've also been to several provinces in Canada). The Caribbean is beautiful. Personally my favorite country I've visited is China, a country with a rich cultural tradition going back thousands of years. Or England, forefather to my own land, (and yours, baby brother).

I like how this thread has gone from "your country doesn't understand our sense of humor" to "oh, so it's country vs country is it?" Yeah, it is. You made it that way by saying one country can't get another.

How's about you provide another fine example of this rich Australian comedic tradition we are all missing? Any You Tube clips of the Aussie Robin Williams for me to gawk at?

When your country's great contributions to the world's cultural canons are AC/DC and Mad Max, I'd be careful about accusing others of xenophobic bias.

God your only example of humor (and you actually think it's a defense) is that they did the same skit 20 years ago. How about providing humor from this century? You could go ahead and do the same with your "modern" bands straight from 30 years ago. Jet and Wolfmother are about 10 years too late -- the Black Crowes fad was sooo 90's.

Just for kicks I'll throw in that I've been to Tuscany and Italy. Sadly for you though Australia isn't high on my list. It's like an even younger America (a relative infant itself) with kangaroos. Meh.

I'd rather go to New Zealand. Much greater geographic variation, and a much more interesting cultural history

Sure but first. Am I correct that you are American and secondly am I correct in assuming you find Robin Williams and Steve Martin funny? On your point of not going to Australia and mocking it... this was the whole idea of why I asked, I find it funny people are so willing to talk down other countries, in nearly all these cases people have never been to said countries.

I certainly hope the guys dancing around in blackface in the original clip went to America before doing it. Otherwise by your definition they were talking down without having been there.

As to your query, yes I am American, and yes, I find both of them to be rather funny at times. I am actually quite curious to see your many examples of this tradition of Australian blackface minstrel performances. I'm eager to watch them.

On that note, have you been to America? You are certainly judging Americans enough.

Where have I judged Americans? I have offered my opinions...your the only person here who has made a judgment against a country as a whole. I said from the start I can understand why Americans would be offended, I could of been immature and said 'zomg Americans made White Chicks' however my point was always about whether the reaction was justified, the majority here obviously feel it was and back home they feel it wasn't. Does that make us bad? One of your shows 'The View' had one of its co-hosts say "The Aborigines, they don't treat them very well," so should I judge you from such an ignorant statement by a fellow American? While there is work to do I can assure you plenty of people in this country are working to improve standards of living and to make up for what our ancestors did to them.

Also yes I have been to your country. I went over in May last year and stayed for two months and it was beautiful. I am glad you asked actually because like your misinformed view of my country I had a slight one of yours. It might shock you considering you have an obvious ignorance to things outside your own backyard but a common very untrue view held in the world is that America is a boring place full of fat, rude and arrogant loud mouths. I have been lucky to travel a lot in my short time on this earth and I was stupid enough to think America would be the last place I would bother visiting as it was just like here and the people were not nice. Luckily one of my best friends married a beautiful young woman from LA and the wedding was over there, I went for 8 weeks and went to as many places as I could and loved it...you really have a beautiful country. I spent a week at Yellowstone and this was probably my favorite part. The people on a whole were lovely and a shout out to those in Texas(for some reason you get a bad rap from the rest of your country) and Denver because the people in these places were by far the nicest.

Finally are you really actually keen to see some Aussie comedy? If so I can probably send some but we obviously find different things funny as I find neither Robin Williams or Steve Martin in the least bit funny...my girlfriend loves Steve Martin but I just don't get a laugh out of it. Of the names you have mentioned Will Ferrell is the only one I really find funny, I find a lot of your shows/movies funny however but obviously different ones to you.

Hey I gave you credit for Rose Tattoo. I said that Australia didn't totally suck.

But there's a reason we don't get your sense of humor.

It ain't funny to dance in blackface.

If they like it, Americans will buy it. My God it doesn't even have to be good -- they bought SilverChair.

    This

    Wasn't

    Good

Stop making it into a national travesty and admit that something your country put on the air sucked. Lord knows I have to apologize to foreigners for being American and therefore taking responsibility for something another American did often enough. Try it once yourself.

How will I live without observing the traditional blackface minstrel routines practiced by the Aboriginal natives? I'm missing world history there.

I'm with you on Robin Williams, but Steve Martin unfunny? He's prostituted himself in some lousy movies, but LA Story and The Jerk are genius.
