Does Hostettler believe he is wrong? Or did he just wimp out? You really think the guy changed his mind in 45 minutes? I don't think it's better to pretend you suddenly changed your mind than to stand up for your beliefs and take responsibility for them.
Its always easy to pander to the hysterical "WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN? WILL ANYONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?" crowd.
I think it is possible to have a "Democratic" or "liberal" anti-illegal immigration stance. They could raise a lot of rhetoric about hitting corporations that knowingly hire illegals (phrase it as "exploitation" or "cheating the American worker"). At the same time they can point to the relatively low unemployment rates and say that there is demand for foreign workers and that the immigration processes and quotas should be made easier and widert. With the above two - I think a Democrat could propose higher border security without losing much of his or her "base". The border tightening could also draw some national security buzz. They could spin it as "legal and humane immigration - yes. Illegal labor exploitation - no." I kind of want this to happen just to see what the Republican response would be. It would force GW into place I don't think he wants to be.
God’s Love – 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
I heard Billy Graham on the Today Show this morning say he's a Democrat. So if a Christian tells you that you can't be a "real" Christian if you vote Dem, throw that one out at him/her.
sweet! Maybe that's why he said in an interview yesterday that he's going to stick to talking about the bible this weekend in New York instead of commenting on politics.
actually, he says politics divide. and those aren't his issues. his issue is communicating the love of Christ. he said this morning on the show that engaging politics means 1/2 the crowd stops listening to him..and then he can't communicate what he's there to communicate.
He actually confirmed that back in November. Toby Kieth is also a Democrat, according to his Playboy interview, and he's a super patriot, for those who still use the "Dems aren't patriots" line.
Well Hostettler was clearly wrong, so hopefully he was able to think about it in 45 minutes and realize it. I know that in the heat of arguments I have said things I knew were wrong the second the words left my mouth. What I actually think happened isn't that he decided he was wrong after he said it... I don't believe he ever thought that in the first place, and was just saying something because that is what people do in politics, and there has been a theme similar but more covert than what he expressed. But that is my opinion and I have no way of proving that.
I saw a stat that said 40% of the Christian vote went to John Kerry...that represents millions of people. The right-wing loves the woe-is-me topic of the "liberal biased media" but I've NEVER once seen a story about christian democrats. If you watched the news, you'd think 100% of christians vote Republican...and we all buy into it. The media is biased to only covering the christian republican messages. For example, most black Americans are Christian. So what's that...20% of America? They don't talk about that...its just assumed but never discussed. I was at a Democracy for America meeting last weekend (which is all democrats) and they had a break-out session to discuss religion and politics. It was standing room only...hundreds of people...mostly white...all christian. The media never talks about that. Christian Democrats are probably the most invisible voting block in America right now.
very good points krosfyah I'm not Christian, but here is something I saw the other day that relates to your points Christian Alliance for Progress http://www.christianalliance.org/site/c.bnKIIQNtEoG/b.592961/k.ABD2/About_the_Alliance.htm Christians that aren't all about restricting the rights of others and being tolerant of others (which I would like to think are most Xians in the US) need to stand up and tell people that the Dobsons, Robertsons and Farwells don't speak for them. You never see a Christian perspective commentator on any of the news channels to counter these nuts.
Another guy I just thought of...the pastor at Willow Creek Church just outside of Chicago...Bill Hybels...he's one of the most evangelical pastors in the country. HUGE on evangelism. big on meeting people where they are and introducing them to Christ.... is a card-carrying Democrat.
It's always like that, average or "normal" people within a group, Christians in this case, won't get too much attention. Only those really loud ones, radical, dramatic, or extreme ones are news-worthy. After a while, those extreme ones just become representatives of that group. I am a Christian, and I don't even like the word of religion. I believe in God and Jesus, coz I felt that's the truth, so I don't need any formality, religion, or group to help me with my belief. Quite frankly, I have problems with people who use their faith to attack others in any way. According to the Bible, Christianity is about love, and love above all. Where is the love in those attacks against their country men/women? Christianity is about tolearance. Where is the toleance in that arrogant and ignorant slogan "you are either with us or against us"? When radical people represent a group of people, something is definitely wrong. When Christianity is used in those shouting matches or politics or even wars, something is wrong with Christians, at least they didn't do enough to prevent some people to abuse their believes. Just my 2 cents.
Well said Real-egal. Most hispanics are christian. Most blacks are christian. Many liberals are even christian (40% of christians are democrats) That is a gigantic proportion of our population right there that nobody ever talks about relative to politics. It's all about the religious right. [Rant] The only real bias that the media has is for the sensational. Anything that is "juicy" or otherwise popular is what the media covers. That's the main bias Americans should be concenred about...not liberal messages. For example, the two most covered stories in the 2000 presidential campaign was that GWB was a country bumkin and Al Gore was boring. Who cares how boring Al Gore is? Is that really newsworthy? The liberal media bias is so incredibly blown out of proportion! [/End Rant]
the Republican scare tatics of demonizing anyone who opposes you, labeling them as unAmerican traitors, and calling them Anti-Christian continue.. I don't even know what to say to this crap anymore, does it even matter? it is not like they are listening or have any desire to have a dialog. All they care about is power and control. All they care about it shutting up dissent by making you afraid to. Karl Rove said this yesterday: The White House's response?
