That's nice and all, but do you dine regularly with gay Mexican industrialists?

I think the difference between the hate and bigotry of DeSantis and Trump is that Trump spouts it out with his mouth to rile up his hate groups while DeSantis just makes laws and restrictions against those he hates.

It's interesting how deep Trump has shifted Republican core thinking to the point where both sides project his best and worst traits onto the next front runner candidate.

I'm not sold on Desantis as GOP frontrunner, and 2 years is a long way to go to see what campaign or persona he'll hatch.

I still remember commentary about Gov Palin and Mike Pence being great GOP prospects and reading up on scant but glowing commentary about them before Romney and McCain got the nod.

Dobbs decision changed a lot. I expect DeSantis to win by 5+ and I expect Rubio to win by around 5 as well, but would not be shocked if Demmings pulled a slight upset. Don't think Crist can win. Florida is not a purple state.

In another thread a poster classified DeSantis as "Agressive regular Conservative". He is aggressive but I'm not sure I would call him a "regular conservative'. A regular conservative to me would be someone like Mike DeWine Governor of Ohio, or Paul Ryan. People who are driven more by Conservative principles than just power and trying to own the other side. After reading an indepth profile of DeSantis the politician I think he most might be like is Richard Nixon.

DeSantis gets a lot of atttention for taking on "the woke" but his record as governor is actually much more mixed from a Conservative side. He's implemented policies to address Climate Change and environmental protections. This seems similar to how Nixon put in the EPA. On COVID for the first few months he was closer to Democrat state policies than other Red States including restrictions on gatherings and encouraging mask wearing. He took a sharp turn in the Summer of 2020 and it's not clear if he was honestly convinced by the Barrington Declaration or if he saw the poltical advantage from what was happening with other GOP governors and Trump.

He's definitely smart and has an impressive resume just like Nixon but he also seems angry and aloof with very little interest in the glad handing and personal side of politics. I think that is very obvious in how he lectured kids for wearing masks in what was supposedly low key publicity gathering. His rhetoric focussed on taking on "woke agenda" and how states are in danger of being overrun by illegal immigrants is very Nixonian taking on Hippies the culture of the late 60's early 70's. DeSantis also seems vengeful at times going after political enemies such as the Florida prosecutor Andrew Warren. At this point it wouldn't surprise me if he actually has an Enemies List.

Obviously Nixon won twice so if he is the new Nixon he might go very far. He might also have a major crash too.

Yeah, that poster was me who called him that. I have to admit that despite being old, I am too young to remember Nixon, so I cannot comment on that.

Just on the Covid sharp turn - I know from a friend who discussed it personally with Governor DeSantis (we have some mutual friends) that his sharp turn was based on data. He looked at the data and determined that the path taken initially was wrong. He didn't blindly follow the Great Barrington Declaration, but, after looking at the data, came to the conclusion that that would be better policy.

    And he was right.

I hope he likes prison as he is illegally sending immigrants to Martha's vineyard using public funds.....illegally.

He's just a political stunt invoking typical Republican using people or businesses as pawns in his game. I'm actually interested in how he's justifying paying double the cost to transport them with this company. Political favor to some high dollar donor or what?

I’ll have to take your word for it and I doubt any of us can say for certain why DeSantis changed his mind. It did certainly benefit him politically especially in position with other potential GOP competitors like Abbott.

I’m sure DeSantis does believe that there are problems with the border, that the culture has shifted too far to the Left but I’m pretty certain he knows that most of what he is doing is pure political show with the primary goal on positioning himself as the leader of the Right.

Abbott is trying something similar but I don’t think he’s as capable as DeSantis.

Not disagreeing with you. I guess it's part of how politics work (if you want to get to the top).

Agreed 100%. He handled COVID well and so many people refuse to give him credit.

Although I don't follow the DeSantis drama, I have been fine with much of what he has done.
If Democrats had any sense of strategy outside of lambasting anyone who falls out of line, they would realize a DeSantis president is a hell of a lot better than a Trump presidency. Instead they are hell bent on sinking him early on leave an unchallenged path for Trump
