As governor he probably has been to Jacksonville several times as it’s one of the major metro areas in Fl. I’m sure he campaigned there during his elections.
In all seriousness if you’re in the path of the storm especially on the coast doesn’t take any chances. I’ve seen what storm surge can do and this storm could have a 7ft storm surge. That can easily take a house off its foundations.
It’s also important to remember even if you believe you can ride out the storm if things go bad and you call for help your putting rescuers at risk too.
Here is more on the event in Jacksonville and also on City Councilor Ju'Coby Pittman. From her description it sounds like DeSantis wasn't invited but the emcee did invite him to speak. Also it doesn't Pittman is some apologist for DeSantis or someone who actually supports his policies. Also on stage next to DeSantis was State Rep Angie Nixon who has said that DeSantis "has blood on his hands" regarding his rhetoric. From what I've seen she wasn't one of those booing or heckling. https://www.mediaite.com/news/democ...-wasnt-invited-but-crowd-shouldnt-have-booed/ Democratic Jacksonville Councilwoman Who Defended DeSantis at Shooting Vigil Says He Wasn’t Invited but Crowd Shouldn’t Have Booed When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) appeared at a vigil for the victims and community of the racially-motivated mass shooting in Jacksonville, he was not well-received. He was audibly booed by the crowd until Democratic Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman stood up for him, telling everyone, “It’s ain’t about parties today.” On Monday, Pittman gave CNN more details about DeSantis’ appearance and revealed that the governor wasn’t actually invited. Speaking to CNN’s Boris Sanchez, Pittman explained that days after a White gunman murdered three Black shoppers at a Jacksonville Dollar General, the hate crime “has crippled and handcuffed our community. And families are hurting. You know, they’re heartbroken. Our community is heartbroken as well.” But when asked about DeSantis, Pittman was eager to make it very clear that despite his taking the mic, this event was not meant to be about him. In fact, she didn’t know he was going to be there, let alone speak: I had no idea that the governor was coming. The emcee of the event for that day called him up. He was just only was supposed to have been acknowledged as being there. That vigil that we did yesterday was was not about the governor. And I will say I don’t support any of the stances or policies that the governor has implemented. You know, my concern yesterday was about the families. It was not a political ploy for me and our community. It was about focusing on the families that was there and the hatred that had come to their community. And so I just want to make myself clear, I wanted the audience to calm down because I wanted him to sit down and I wanted it to be the event that was for the residents and the community that had come together for unity. That’s what that event was about, not the governor. DeSantis called the shooter, who turned the gun on himself, a “scumbag,” and pledged $1 million in funds for security at Edward Waters University, a HBCU that the gunman initially approached before the shooting at the Dollar General. Nonetheless, some critics have said that DeSantis’ “war on woke” has spread the rhetoric that led to this crime; Florida State Rep. Angie Nixon (D) said DeSantis had “blood on his hands” when details of the shooter’s white supremacist beliefs came to light: This is a governor who has done nothing but fan these types of happenings throughout our state. Look, at the end of the day, the governor has blood on his hands. He has had an attack, an all-out attack, on the black community with his anti-woke policies, which we know very well was nothing more than a dog whistle to get folks up and riled up in the way in which it just happened yesterday.
No idea. That said given DeSantis has many public appearances there are plenty of occasions to protests him.
people are supposed to warmly welcome and not show disdain for the anti-black politician who has disenfranchised the very people who live there and whose base is full of people like the shooter… whoever invited Meatball there is a dumbass
DeSantis plays the anti-woke game, but he doesn't stir up racial hatred the way Trump does. His policies may be racist but I don't think he has blood on his hands for this shooting. That said, it is time for him to take stronger action on bringing the temperature down on the anti-woke bs. I doubt he does it, but it's what needs to be done.
Its interesting one panders to the evangelicals and the other panders to the anti-liberal, but yet everyone blames the evangelicals for electing Trump. As a Floridian, I greatly appreciated how DeSantis handled Covid, all criticisms be damned. That said, since his presidential bid, I am actually starting to believe he would be a much worse president than Trump. Still a tossup with crooked Hillary. ALL of these candidates are absolute trash.
If Trump had not run in the first place, A Republicans would be president right now. We can point blame at whatever groups we want. Ultimately, he appealed to enough people who voted for him and fervently loyal. This isn't the first time in human history a cult of personality has done this, it's just really the first time in the US which we all thought was immune to this stuff. DeSantis really didn't handle COVID the way ya think. All the lockdowns and such still happened, just on a local level. The big cities did the work instead of the states. Rural areas of Florida did what they wanted to of course which is fine by me. But even in rural areas people were wearing masks at first inside of stores before it became a political issue. Lines to get the vaccine stretched for hours all over Florida and you had to get an appointment a month in advance. Florida was not organized at all. DeSantis is not an administrator - he doesn't make decisions based on running the state, but rather throwing red meat to his constituents. Regardless, I look past each of their flaws and personality and focus on the policies they would enact. Republicans don't have a great platform other than to build a wall. This country faces many issues - and restricting immigration actually will hurt the economy in multiple ways. The need for reform is great. I would vote for a Republican candidate for president if they actually took science seriously and put it above pandering. Climate change is real. Covid is real and vaccines work.
Oh wow, didn't realize you were in Florida, you and yours ok from the storm? I hope all of our Florida members are safe, Florida has been hammered recently.............good luck and please stay safe
Thank you! Im in central Florida, and my neighborhood is pretty well insulated from most catastrophic hurricane events. Permits and code have come a long way in the last 25 years! We have had some much needed rain and a few gusts of wind over 20mph, so very fortunate.
A bunch of emergency vehicles in a convoy? I mean what does this actually demonstrate about DeSantis? I don't think you can judge a governor by pointing to a video of a convoy.
