That they had no problem with until they wouldn't give them the money they wanted. Completely talking about of my ass here, but I've never been a huge fan of them.
As far as I know, they're all taking taking less pay than they were making, in order to get the station off the ground. Granato and Topper had likely been in talks about this for years, because of the BS they had to put up with at 610. The webcam/chat in studio, chatting with the hosts between breaks, sometimes during the show. Hosts meeting up with 5-10 people at Nick's for lunch. Listeners making their OWN events, scavenger hunt, bar golf, "not endorsed" by the hosts, yet they normally show up to even unsanctioned ones. It's gone way beyond just a sports radio station. It's the Clutchfans of Radio.
Glad to see the love for 1560. They're by far my favorite station these days. It's very rare that I hit up 610 or 790 lately. I love Charlie P. but I'm worried that 790 won't survive much longer as 1560 continues to build steam. I'd love to see Charlie, Matt J, and Wexler move over to 1560 somehow. Other than those guys everyone else in the Houston sports talk market is worthless. The 610 morning show and 790's monsters of the midday have to be the 2 biggest train wrecks allowed on the airwaves.
I'm a HUGE Howard Stern fan, but now that I can actually get reception for the station at work I listen to John and Lance 'till 11am, then hit the replay of Howard Stern on Sirius. Their show is just outstanding. I cant recall how many times I've been laughing in the shower as the 7am show starts. Those two are a great team. Love 'em!
As much attention as 1560 is getting, It would take a miracle for it to shut down 790, a station backed by ESPN. Especially when their signal doesnt even reach half of the city from what I understand. I have no loyalty to any of the am stations. I do like that 1560 actually talks about the Rockets once in awhile (610 calls themselves the home of the Rockets, yet when someone calls about them they change the subject) but dont care for their inside jokes and voice impressions. If I want voice impressions I will hit up Walton & Johnson on the 950. I love Charlie Palillo on 790, but thats about all I like. John Lopez is a complete assclown. And Rich Lord on 610...well, he speaks for himself...
Adam Clanton experience on 610 all morning. Check it out. Its a lot better than regular Mark and Andre babble.
Meh, for some reason Adam Clanton reminds me of Jay Mohr's character in Jerry Maguire, kind of a smarmy slimeball way. He actually knows his Rockets stuff and is warming up to me, but not ready to put him on Charlie Palilo level yet.
That's weird...I can't believe espn790.com still works and http://www.790kbme.com/main.html is the same site too
hehe. Clanton read the text I sent in earlier this morning after Texas Mike called in again to prattle on about how the Cowboys were going to crush the Texans. I was like "Somebody needs you people this is only the preseason. If this game was held in the 90s, Mike Irvin would be still skipping practice to smoke rocks as fat as Texas Mike's head"
Does he sound like a pretty old white guy that talks loud and fast? If it is, that guy calls into ESPN 97.5 ALL the time, especially on the Poker show (Main Event) and Calvins show
Yeah he always calls in to shows as Texas Mike or Longhorn Mike. Sounds like some old dude with a slight accent, loves to talk big, but its mostly harmless smack.
Get your 610 talk out of here (I actually like AC, and Wex, Vera and Jackson (just not with Rich Lord)) I just prefer listening ot the shows on 1560 as opposed to the others. Rome's schtick is still fine, it's the same it's always been, but I've liked the alternative of having Hoffman/Nuno. I just completely turn the radio off though when Richard Justice was on his own. My loyalties lie with the guys who I was cool with when they were on 610 though, Lance and Chance. I've been listening Lance since like 99-2000. I've known them since 03. Been going to as many events of 610 as I could where I knew either Chance or Lance would be there, I talk with Granato at times at some of the events. Anyway, I'll stop my 1560 whoring. For now...heh.
I used to listen to 610 ALL THE TIME, but since I've started working for 97.5, I stopped listening to them (running the board for Cowherd's show right now ) I agree, I liked listening to John and Chance when they were with 610
I dunno. Maybe its just me... But I like my sports talk radio to be at least 80% sports talk, and 20% other... I find that to be a good mix. I listened to 1560 yesterday and they had some w**** from some bar on there for like an hour talking about mixed drinks. And I guess thats cool, it was sort of entertaining but I prefer some sports talk. If I wanted to listen to some talk radio I'd listen to Opie and Anthony. 610 callers are horrible though, I turn the radio down usually whenever somebody calls in to the morning show, its unbearable with some of the people they let on the air. I could call in and let my air condition drone into the speaker and it would have more well thought out takes than some of those dudes.
Sounds like you were listening to the Hoffy show. I know most people don't like him or his show, but I'm a fan. The only time I don't like it is when he does interviews with models and bartenders which seems to be the majority of his guests lately.
Besides football has not started yet so what else is there to talk about? all radio stations dig deep when the stros fall out of the play off hunt. 1560 best football talk in town hands down.
