This a trend that you will start to see now with the salary restrictions of the new CBA.

Average guards will not be over paid anymore like they where in the past. So guys on Llull's level will tend to lean more toward staying at home if they can make similar money at home.

See Carlos Navarro and Rudy Fernandez.

On the other side of that average bigs will still come over because their is a chance that after 2 years of making chump change they can land a 7+ mil a year deal.

Guys like Biedrins, Okur and Kristich have all made a killing in states just being average.

he probably thinks/knows he will never be a starter in the nba
so why flip a starting gig in the spanish league for a bench position in the nba?

It is just another example of the conspiracy, now world wide, against Morey.

It's not his fault, it's just everybody working against him.

but to be serious for a second, not a major loss.
Lull would not be a major difference maker in the NBA.

Look at what the Spurs got for Scola who was a big man and a much more accomplished player, when it looked like he wasn't going to come over, ; a salary dump of <$2M when trading him within the same conference. Now everyone regards it as one of Daryl Morey's best moves.

I'm a firm believer that you keep his rights, and much of the noise right now is just leverage for an eventual NBA deal, if he wants to come over.

Until Llull puts his name to a contract with a prohibitive buyout, there's no point in worrying about what-ifs. It's customary for teams to offer an extension when a player gets to the last year of their contract; this would be like teams being scared off of bidding on LeBron, because Cleveland offered him a max extension before free agency. Just because an extension was offered, doesn't mean he has to sign it.

I think Llull would really fit in well with the roster the Rockets have constructed; there's an obvious hole at backup PG and a very competitive situation at the 2-guard spot; these holes are unlikely to be filled by 2013.

If anything, the news just makes Llull's negotiating position stronger.

There's always a risk involved when drafting foreign players, let's not pretend that was unknown. Players who thought they were ready, or at least wanted to be, for the NBA could have realized they weren't. Maybe they got married. Maybe their parents are ill. Maybe they're having too much fun. Who knows.

at least Llull cannot play for other NBA teams.

That was the purpose of drafting him.

Wow...way too many people in this thread are acting like he's already signed the extension. The team offered him an extension. We don't know what the buyout situation is with it. But we do know that he hasn't signed it yet.

Is the sky really falling? Or did you fail at reading comprehension? Par for the course here at ClutchFans, it seems lately.

    Hmmmm

So it's a trend that we'll see under the new CBA, and yet the examples you list for us are from ages ago under the old CBA?

The Rockets didnt draft Llull .... Denver did with the 34th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. The Rockets then bought his draft rights.

Well, I purposely never get excited about players that we own rights to but are not coming over immediately, and this is why. I watched some of his highlights and he is a good player. But, He never wore a rockets jersey so I will not miss what we never really had.

Even if it doesn't work out, dude was a 2nd round pick. Les paid for that pick, I don't see why people are complaining.
