I just read a quote from the Oprah interview where Jay Leno said he lied when he gave his retirement speech from "The Tonight Show" saying he was "retiring" and he was devastated when NBC asked him to leave in five years for Conan to take over the job.

They are just moving his show, not canceling it. Thus, the saving money on NBC's part by initially just "moving" time slots instead of cancellations. But now that Conan is leaving the "Tonight Show", I doubt Jay is going to argue to keep "The Jay Leno Show" instead of "The Tonight Show"

By the 90's I wasn't living in Houston but I remember in the 80's for awhile Letterman would come on sometimes at 11:30 right after the tonight show and sometimes at Midnight. Anyone know why Channel 2 would move Conan too so late?

didnt letterman used to prank call people back in the day? i'm sure it was all setup to someone on his staff, but still, he should go back to that.

Here's the E! article on Oprah's interview with Jay Leno:

You can click on the link for some videos. Embedding is not working right now.

This interview did not help Jay Leno's image rebuilding at all, IMO

Jay also had timeslot protection which meant NBC couldn't move his show without his approval or else it's effectively cancellation.

Wow. I thought Leno would start his PR campaign with the Oprah show, but it didn't really help him much. I've never seen an episode of Oprah, but saw some clips...she really didn't lob any softballs at him. Surprised.

Dude, if you ever actually watch her (which, I know, we guys rarely do), she kicks much ass. She's almost always the smartest person in the room, no matter who she interviews.

There's a good reason Cormac McCarthy had his only televised interview with her. People panned her for it, but you flipping try to interview Cormac McCarthy. Cripes.

I think it's only the record for Conan's Tonight Show. That mark has probably been topped many times before, most notably when Obama was on, when Johnny left, and following the Seinfeld finale.

In regards to the Leno cheapshots at Letterman & Letterman's wife...
"Well, I did a joke about that, yes."

"Even the audience went, 'Ooooh!' " Oprah interrupted.

"But it was a good joke," Leno said. "Did you laugh when you heard it?"

"No, I did not. I did not laugh. You know what, I thought that was beneath you, actually."

Ouch. But that didn't stop Leno from trying to defend the crack while at the same time admitting that his competitors' jabs didn't exactly bounce right off him.

"But how many jokes like that have I done? I did one joke in the middle of the week, and I never did another one. I had a cheap shot thrown at me; I threw one cheap shot back, and I moved on."

When Oprah asked whether he thought one cheap shot deserved another, he answered quickly: "Yeah, it's OK."

Not so fast there, my friend...

    Leno's Letterman/Intern jokes
    1. "You know the best way to get Letterman to ignore you? Marry him"
    2. Bing search segment "infidelity + viagra + AARP" result: David Letterman
    3. Motel Room bit w/ Chelsea Handler "I learned this one from Letterman"
    4. "Letterman's taking shots at me, I thought he only took shots at interns!" :eubankslaugh: *eubanksjazzriff*

What exactly were the Letterman cheapshots? He has a big chin? He stole the show from him in the early 90s? He joked about Leno repeating history and stealing the show from Conan like he did 17 years ago? All valid.

All it did is make Leno seem desperate at getting back at Letterman.

He could have easily said "David who? Oh the guy who I beat for 15 years?" (although his ego would never admit to those two years of failure)

In any case, even Oprah couldn't save him. The guy is a slimeball.

I don't get the big deal about the jokes. I mean, everybody makes fun of everybody else.

I can't wait until September when Conan is on another network though. It'll be fun.

At first I thought Leno would break into character and ask for pity and forgiveness from this whole debacle.. After watching the interview with Oprah, it is clear to me that Leno is playing hardball and will be an NBA commissioner in no time, David Stern has a new best friend...
