How is being pissed at Leno/NBC for, 1) undercutting Conan's show by putting Jay on as a lead-in 2) being impatient with Conan's ratings 3) Leno agreeing to take back the show after stepping down, an example of cynicism? There is a difference between right and wrong. It doesn't have anything to do with distrust or assumption of motive that would fall in line with cynicism, the fact are out, and Conan was mistreated. Period. Anger/outrage is a natural response, and sadness over the end is even more natural.

Why would anyone have "contempt" for Carson?

And what does John Stewart have to do with anything?

awww, poor baby. That's an awful lot of crying for someone complaining about crying.

You need to put a little more work into your trollin'. That was about as original as a Leno show.

EDIT, OK, just read that you said Tonight Show and did see the post mentioning the Obama on Letterman visit.

Though I do remember reading once that ratings are counted with only the first minute of the show. They do track the whole show but they usually only use the first minute when they say what the ratings were for a show. So If Obama was on Letterman for the whole show, I can see people leaving it on for a little while since everywhere except Houston it seems has Ferguson on right after Letterman.

I hope Leno bombs, gets booted, and then bring Conan back because I don't see how NBC will stick with Leno this go around, his time is will be up before he even gets started again.

Great show last night, Conan has been killing it for weeks and it was a good way to go out.

    I'm with CoCo.

He still would have had his job if they experimented with the time slot a half hour later... Leno was gonna failed anyways whether it be moved at 11:30 or 12:00, all Conan had to do was just sit and let it all play out...

You don't know that...and Conan had too much respect for the show and ...and yes too much pride...to be bumped by Leno yet again. Now, he can get a fresh start somewhere else, an NBC will have to live with the consequences of their actions for years to come.

The montage for anybody who missed. Just a taste of the fun you may have missed out on if you weren't watching.

I feel the same way, I actually gave Jimmy Fallon a few minutes last night when his opening sequence in Honor of Conan came on.

    But I like Kimmel more.

Man, I just started to watch Conan the last 2 weeks too.

Last night's episode was beautiful, Conan went out on the highest note possible. Jamming.....

Eh. In the last week, he tried to spend millions of dollars of his employers' money out of spite. I'm not sure how the whole thing is classy. He did what was in his own best interests. As did NBC. As did Leno. Nothing wrong with that for any of them, but it's not like any of them took the high road here - they all simply did what was best for them.

I think people are also underestimating NBC here. In taking sides, people are forgetting that any publicity is good publicity in a situation like this - people love to watch trainwrecks (see reality TV). Both shows had great ratings in these last few weeks and it brought lots of attention to both Leno and Conan. When Leno's show returns, lots of people will tune in just to see how it all goes. And while there are the Conan boycotters, he didn't really have the same audience as Leno anyway, so it's not really going to make a difference - those are mostly people that never were going to tune into Leno one way or another. Outside of the financial boondoggle of having to drop one of them, NBC is going to come out fine in all of this.

People just don't hold grudges against networks - no one cares enough to do it. The bigger question for NBC is where they are going to get 5 new hours of primetime programming from. The reason they tried the Leno experiment was that they didn't have enough good programming as it was.

It was a joke; he's not going to ask for donations to Haiti and then destroy a $65 million Picasso.

Well, the question is, do you think they actually bought that car instead of just renting it? Do you think they actually bought "Mine That Bird"? Do you think that Snuggie was really made of mink? Etc . . .

Well they did let Southland go, which had a lot of potential IMO.

I agree though, I think after everything settles, the biggest hit Leno will take will be to his character.

And despite what he said, I hardly think NBC would have allowed him to waste money like that.

I kind of think his final spending spree was a bit of a disappointment though...the car was believable, the race horse not so much (though the snuggie and NFL access possibly). The Smithsonian skeleton, caviar and Picasso were so far fetched it was borderline stupid and redundant. I think it would have been a far better gag to blow up the car...albeit a fake version of the car...but it still could come off real.

I was amazed at how many people either thought it was real and were outraged or thought they were exposing some secret for pointing out it wasn't real. Though the use of the Beatles Lovely Rita for Tom Hanks walk on song was real according to ?uestlove who says it is on the list of songs they can't do because it costs 500,000.

That was a joke. Conan addressed this. Last night he had a dinosaur brought from the Smithsonian, holding a tube that shot beluga whale caviar all over an original Picasso. He then addressed how people were angry that he was wasting money. It was all a joke. That wasn't Mine that Bird on stage... with a mink snuggie, that was just a horse with clothing on it.

I promise you that the NBC executives were not rubbing their hands together with dollar signs in their mind. Yea, what you mention is short-term gains. But realize that NBC is trying to sell a brand. Jay Leno seemed likable to America, he has lost that persona. Who is going to laugh at someone's jokes when you dislike that person. Not every joke is going to be a knee-slapper.
Not only did Jay do bad things, but also did it to someone we all know. We saw another side of a friend, do something horrible to another friend. This is not Letterman cheating on his wife, and then passing the bad situation off with humor.
Train wrecks aren't good for brand names, news anchors, late-night... etc. You're thinking of reality tv shows.

And you're right. Nobody is going to be successful in a boycott of a network. But it will be VERY easy to boycott Leno. Its hard to laugh with someone you detest. The brand is trashed.
