I think the ratings will go up modestly, but that may be due to the fact that Jay isn't on at 10 anymore as a lead-in.

I cant' view the video so I can't comment on it.

There is nothing this person can say in that video that will make me believe he values the Legacy of the Tonight show over his own career though. If he values it so much, why doesn't he resign and let Jay have it back since jay drew a bigger audience and did better business for the Show and for NBC?

I'm not saying he doesn't care, but it also serves his interests to care about the Legacy as his legacy his tied directly to it now. It's also in his interests to play the "it's not about me it's about Carson and the legacy of The Tonight Show" card so he is hurt as little as possible when he jumps to Fox.

so your mind is blindly made up and unwilling to listen to legit arguments...this isnt D&D

Actually, it sounds like he is geared up to resign from that letter.

That's kind of what I was thinking. If you put a crappy talk show in front of Jay every day, the rating won't go up.

I'm willing to listen and yes my mind is made up, but I don't think blindly is an accurate way to describe it.

I'm not a Conan fan (I don't dislike him, but I have never really attached to any of the late night hosts). I think people who are siding with this "All Conan is worried about is the legacy of the Tonight Show" stuff are Conan fans. I fully agree that he is being given a raw deal by NBC and I support him quitting over it and going to Fox to get a better deal.

Seconded. I like how on the front page of the board it led me in with "Conan O'Brien announces" ... then I clicked to read "microfracture surgery" and lost it. Great stuff.

I loved Conan's letter too ... the "People of Earth" start and taking a serious topic and ending it with a quip about his hair. I don't watch the late night shows really, but I've come out of this more interested now to watch O'Brien.

How can anybody not support the genius of Jay Leno?

I, for one, love to watch him stutter half-heartedly through his lame, poorly delivered jokes and conduct his bland interviews full of awkward dialogue and even more awkward moments of silence.

Of course Conan is pissed. Of course he's concerned about his career. But I don't think he's disingenuous about his desire to maintain the legacy of the Tonight Show. Oswald speaks exactly about this stuff, it's almost as if he predicted it.

Of course we are Conan fans. Conan is better for the legacy of "The Tonight Show" than bringing Jay back. ;)

I think at the end of the day, Conan definitely has more true fans and loyal watchers, but he also doesn't fit a lot of people's taste in comedy- those with a bland, straightforward sense of humor. :p

Meanwhile Jay probably doesn't have as many true fans, but after the news when there is nothing on there are more people who will sit through him and chuckle a couple of times...again, those people with a bland sense of humor IMO. These people are also probably less willing to give Conan a chance.

I don't think he's disingenuous about caring about the legacy of the Tonight Show, but I think it is disingenuous to say that is the most important thing in play here for him. Of course Oswald predicted it. I could have predicted it. He's playing this perfectly for himself. He's getting sympathy from his audience AND people who are not endeared to him (Clutch) and when he jumps he will be in a great position while NBC and Leno to a lesser extent have all the dirt on them.

Conan should bust out the masterbating bear.

Howard Stern had an interesting idea...he said he should go on Conan and Howard will interview him.

what i thought was big in his letter was that he said that he turned down more lucrative offers elsewhere to stay with NBC just because of the Tonight Show deal in 2009. The Tonight Show is a part of television history and I think that meant a lot to Conan and if he gets pushed to 12:05 while the show in name is still 'the tonight show' pretty much everyone will still associate Leno with it. Heck I am sure people know still think Leno is the Tonight Show.

I am glad he is speaking out as he is NBC is really shooting themselves in the foot. I am sure Fox or ABC would be happy to have Conan on their networks

Look, just listen to the clip if you have a chance and are still interested. This was not Oswald trying to predict a way for Conan to leverage his position. He was just talking about his perception of Conan (and Letterman) as a person and his passion for The Tonight Show and Late Night. Nothing to do with politicking or otherwise.

His take was Conan and Letterman were passionate to carry on the tradition and take those shows to the next level, whereas Leno was someone who is competitive and wanted the gig for the sake of it (nothing wrong with that).

    awesome thread title

leno has the right to work, but if he can't see that he will take a PR hit with this move, then i don't know what to say...

    i am on team conan

and to be fair, i enjoy both individuals equally, i do not watch any talk shows...
