5 stars for the thread title, five stars for Conan's letter, and 10 stars for the way he ended the letter.

    Great all around thread.

Conan can do his show in Kramer's old apartment using the old Merv Griffin set.

 I still believe CONAN and will stick by him.

[I go and watch Clutch's YouTube on the "and then The Slot Move happened"]

Ummm... never mind. Do not give him that slot [that's what SHE said].

    NBC=FAIL

The fact that America prefers Jay Leno to Conan O'Brien is further proof that we are slowly inching our way closer to Idiocracy status

Conan truly is looking out for the legacy and future of "The Tonight Show" and late night TV as a whole, which is admirable. He is putting it in NBC's hands, and they will probably **** it up, but he's trying. He could have gotten mad and bolted to another network

Between last night's monologue and this letter, Conan is absolutely b****-slapping NBC.

NBC execs should be in full panic mode, this is a PR disaster.

    Come on. Is this serious?

You really believe that his only objection to this is what it will do to the legacy of "The tonight Show?"

This is about Conan not wanting to play second fiddle to Leno anymore when he was told he wouldn't have to. It's about not wanting to accept NBC basically taking away what was special about the Tonight Show to begin with. Starting at midnight makes Conan's show significantly less important.

There isn't anything wrong with that either. He's thinking about his career, his own legacy, etc. I mean, I'm sure he does care about The Tonight Show's legacy as well, but that isn't why he or his fans are upset.

I don't watch every night, but I will say that I have watched more episodes of Conan hosting The Tonight Show than I did in all the years Leno was on there.

NBC has done nothing but screw up their network in the last 5 years. It's a frigging mess from morning til late night.

I was about to post something exactly along those lines.

    Instead, I'll say this...

If Sylvester Stallone hosted a late night talk show, I'm fairly confident he could match Leno's comedic and interviewing skills.

    NBC is trainwrecking big time.

30 Rock is about the only thing they've got going anymore, and ironically that show is a satire about how dysfunctional NBC studios are.

Tim Grover has been hired by Conan to help him get back to work. ;)

NBC has really screwed up lately...

They better not take CHUCK off the air!

i hope there's still time to write in a gag surrounding the late night controversy this season.

you know only 30 Rock could tackle that one with wit and precision. although, Conan seems to be handling it just fine.

but some of my favorite bits on 30 Rock is when they put NBC on blast.

Well, obviously he is worried about his career as well, but I think he thinks NBC is going to kill the tonight show by making this move. I have never once taken Conan to be a greedy showbiz personality- sure he wants to succeed, but "The Tonight Show" is about more than just money and personal success to most of these hosts. That's why there was such a big deal made with the Letterman situation when Carson left, and why a big deal is being made now. If you saw the last "Late Night" with Conan, he thanked David Letterman extensively- a man whom he would be competing with in a few months.

You can even read the first paragraph of his letter and it's apparent this isn't all about him.

NBC violated Conan's contract. He can basically do what he wants and will get paid for it. Leno's show failed because he isn't funny. I'm sorry Conan's wasn't doing better so that Leno could just be cancelled altogether.

I wonder if the ratings go back up if Leno returns? Just who were all these people that stopped watching once leno was moved? Old people are all asleep by that time. There must have been a lot of under 50 folks who gave up once Conan took over but didn't follow Leno to his earlier time slot. The question then becomes is it to late for Leno to recapture that audience? Maybe they all went over to Letterman? I guess I'm left wondering that if Leno does resume "The Tonight Show" duties...will that audience come back or is it too late? I wish Leno would just bow out so NBC would have to stay with Conan. Leno had his run. It should be over imo.

Posted previously in the other thread, this is Patton Oswald's take on it (before the letter, of course).

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=5024749&postcount=141

What he said about Conan and his take on Conan's view on Late Night is basically what Conan ended up writing. I'd say there's legitimacy there. And I'd wager Patton has credible incite as someone who probably has a few friends who have written for all the late night shows.
