When you type "cacls filename" does it output the name of an existing user or say "BUILTIN\administrators"?

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>cacls drive:/folder/Jonathan's Music Folder
Displays or modifies access control lists (ACLs) of files

    CACLS filename [/T] [/E] [/C] [/G user:perm] [/R user [...]]
    [/P user:perm [...]] [/D user [...]]
    filename Displays ACLs.
/T Changes ACLs of specified files in
the current directory and all subdirectories.
/E Edit ACL instead of replacing it.
/C Continue on access denied errors.
/G user:perm Grant specified user access rights.
    Perm can be: R Read
    W Write
    C Change (write)
    F Full control
/R user Revoke specified user's access rights (only valid with /E).
    /P user:perm Replace specified user's access rights.
    Perm can be: N None
    R Read
    W Write
    C Change (write)
    F Full control
/D user Deny specified user access.
Wildcards can be used to specify more that one file in a command.
You can specify more than one user in a command.

    Abbreviations:
    CI - Container Inherit.
The ACE will be inherited by directories.
    OI - Object Inherit.
The ACE will be inherited by files.
    IO - Inherit Only.
The ACE does not apply to the current file/directory.

    JPM:

When it displays all that info it means there was an error. the problem was that it did not find the folder. I you have a space value in your fole/folder name the path must be in quotes meaning :

    cacls "drive:/folder/folder name"

Try that and it should return a smaller ouput that shows something like in my previous post.

i keep getting the "path cannot be specified" option. That's alright though, i'm about to sign off for the night. Thanks for all your help FrancisFan. I'm hoping to have the computer formatted early next week, which will wipe out this problem. Thanks again!

Wow....the forum history here is like the most readable computer help manual ever written!!!

I'm in the same boat as JPM.

My old Compaq presario computer is due for a hard drive reformat -- too many instals and deletes of software over the last few years and lots of odd stuff going on. Somehow my harddrive has 17g of it's 20g harddrive full -- yet i've no idea what's on there!

So...i've ordered the 'restore' disks from HP.

    Now what?

Do i just hit reformat and then spark it up with the new disks -- or is there something else i need to do? I've transfered the files i need to another computer -- and will reinstal software as needed.

I formatted my machine a couple of weeks ago.

www.putergeek.com has a great section about the format/installation process.

Maybe before formatt your HD, you should consider these two things first:
    1. Try to see if any software can get rip of your trojan.
    2. Try to restore your computer to an earierly time using windows restore.

If you need to format your HD just because of some trojan virus which you don't want to format, I'm sure there's some way you can deal with it.

    one of two ways...

    1) The restore disk is bootable and you can set the cd drive as the first bootable device...it will recognize the bootable disk and start the process automatically.

    2) it might come with the floppy disk to start the system recovery...or if that fails...there is probably a link to download the floppy disk image from the manufacturers site.
