Try this, it's an anti spam/virus just released from Microsoft and it's free.

    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/?mkt=en-us

if possible download it from another computer and install it on yours via usb mem stick.

otherwise reformat and stop clicking on "yes to running activex" popups from those p*rn sites.

Another plug for malware bytes. My 9 year old daughter loves to play these free games and she is prone to click on stuff, not knowing any better. Well, one day we had on our home computer, this program called "Green AV" and it claimed that every time it removed a virus, worm, or trojan or any other malware, that it was helping the environment. But what it really was doing was making us think that every Internet site had some issue where our security was being breached and other stupid weird things. I had gotten a tip about malware bytes and installed it. It zapped that thing out of there and the home computer has been working great.

To the op - I don't care what it takes, do WHATEVER you can to get malware bytes installed on your computer. And if you can't get it for free, then you are not getting the true program.

After running virus removal software, I usually use hijackthis 1.99 to get rid of the registry entries of the browser hijacking virus. It's free. Run a scan and go through the registry, you should be able to spot the files that are hijacking your browser. I have tried removing the virus a few times with different software but it always regenerates because it's somehow embedded in your registry.

Did anybody get an error related to "vstskmgr.exe" recently?

    I believe it's a McAfee related file.

You can try doing a system restore using a date where the pc was fine. The virus will still be there but it won't have the registry settings it needs to load (if it did add settings to your registry). Then you can remove it as above.

Unfortunately some forms of this security tools (and I think an offshoot called security system) have been able to get around malwarebytes.

I think this is an evolution of the 'antivirus xp/09' malware. Nasty stuff.

This. I had some spyware on my computer before that acted like a antivirus software when it wasn't. I used malwarebytes and then installed SpyBot and now it's back to normal.

Nice call. I got that about a month ago and I learned how to REBUILD my XPS400 from scratch... it even overwrote the Master Boot Record. That's how I learned to give advice about rebuilding/restoring/reformatting to Lady_Di about her mom's PC. :(

I just somehow managed to acquire this virus in today's example of me being the most tech savvy person on the planet! I'm following the advice from this thread. Blake and company, you guys are about to all become my heroes if I can figure out a way to get rid of this thing.

I hate my life. Okay, so I downloaded malwarebytes on another computer and saved it to a flash stick. Installed it on the infected PC. Then I tried following Blake's directions of going into Windows Explorer to rename every .exe file like it says and here's where me being an idiot becomes a problem.

I can't seem to locate the Malwarebytes file within the folder section of Windows Explorer. It could be right in front of me and i'm just missing it but I know i'm not supposed to try to install it before I play with the .exe files, right?

    Thanks in advance. :)

Edit: [Patting myself on the back] I figured out how to get Malwarebots or whatever the hell it's called in the folder list! Of course, I have no idea what to do now.

    Here's what it's showing me:

That's how I got mine too!!!!!!

All I know is one second I was browsing through the BBS then all of a sudden an Adobe file started to load. Needless to say, there's no Adobe files on here that I would have clicked on so I went into tasks and clicked 'end task' before whatever was loading could finish.

Next thing you know it's Viagra, Porno.org pop-ups and all of my anti-virus programs were rendered useless.

Ugh.. That was exactly my experience. I'm scared to even be surfing the bbs on my 2nd computer, but I have no coice. How did you install malwarebytes? Did you just rename the setup file and then run tht on your infected computer? Then you hve to rename the .exe files that come out of that?

Yeah. I hear ya. The instructions I've found seem helpful, but not detailed enough. God knows I don't want to restore this and lose everything...

Well, I instlled malwarebytes and renames the files. The virus can still detect tht it's an .exe file and blocks it. This has really worked for people??
