Compaq Center changing to Hewlett-Packard Center now?

Yeah, just like you'd never see a Houston-based company buying the naming rights to a California facility, especially not one in Silicon Valley.

Actually, I am willing to bet that the other Compaq Center does get a name change to reflect the HP name, but with the naming rights deal in Houston expiring so soon, I doubt they'll bother with a name change.

Any number of companies could come in and purchase the naming rights. It doesn't even have to be a local company necessarily.

 

It's not the city's decision to make. The Rockets have the right to make the naming rights deal and the Rockets will get the bulk of the revenues from said naming rights. It's unlikely that Les will want to forgo the millions available in naming rights reveneus to name the building after the former Mayor (especially since I don't think Les is all that close to Lanier).

But even if that were a possibility, what would they call the place until Lanier dies? The Arena in Houston?
