Argh. One day my contributing member status will go through and I'll be able to edit/consolidate my posts when I forget, lol.

Is it a SATA drive? You might be out of luck if he couldn't get it to start up. Then again, not getting it to start up can be tech speak for probably 10 different things. Usually all drives will at least power on to a degree, even if it's only to make infuriating clicking/garbage disposal noises. What you could try is to give a USB/Sata docking station a try. You basically buy one of these (http://tinyurl.com/3rcveh6) and pop your drive in there. These usually work though whenever the drive isn't very bad off.

Alternatively, I have one and if you want we could meet up somewhere and I could tell you pretty much then and there how salvageable it is. You bring the drive, and I'll bring my laptop and the above docking station. If I can't fix it, then no charge.

There's a more complicated route that involves DDRescue and using Linux system boot discs (http://www.forensicswiki.org/wiki/Ddrescue). This is usually the last line of defense when the drive is bad off. This is usually the route I try and take when just popping it in using a USB/sata docking station and trying to read it as a external drive doesn't work. I hope some of that made sense!

Does this involve 76,000+ Power On Self Tests (or more)?

Yeah it makes a ton of sense thanks. Unfortunately I'm in Dallas(and I'm guessing you're in Houston) so I can't really bring the HD to you.
I'll try the docking station first. Also if you know any comp.repair folk in the Dallas area that you could recommend, I'd sincerely appreciate it. Thanks again man.:)

When I turned my laptop on the cd/dvd drive kept popping out. I closed it then after few seconds it'll open back up. I went to Computer Management on my computer and the DVD/CD-Rom wasn't there. I have an HP G70-470us notebook pc. I went to the HP website to try and download DVD/CD-Rom driver but I couldn't find it on there website. The problem happened shortly after I upgraded to windows 7. Its been almost 2 years now.

Ahh. Well, I can see where driving a few hundred miles would be a bit of a deterrent in this case. :)

Yeah, give that a shot first. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll try and find some good links to that DDRescue procedure. It is a little like nuclear physics, but if you happen to get bored after the docking station... could always try it out.

There are of course data-recovery companies, but they're awfully expensive if the data you have is anything less important than classified FBI or CIA documents. I can't say I have any recommendations for the Dallas area, but I'll give whatever sort of help I can give over the Internets via here or MSN, etc.

Hmm. That does sound puzzling. The first relatively simple tip I can think of is have you tried pressing firmly on the drive to make sure it's snapped into place on the side? Sometimes those suckers are fairly flimsy and pop out of their sockets (however slightly) that connect them to the laptop. Also, see if a firm press of the cd/dvd tray back into the drive itself works. Not necessarily a hard shove, but a calculated shove . Also, is it constantly popping out after you push it back in again or does it seem to stop after a few tries? And are you running Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?

I did a bit of searching as well and you're right on there not being any cd/dvd drivers. Usually they're included in the chipset driver set or just simply plug and play a lot of the time.

This might help you out a little bit though. Walk through these troubleshooting steps I found at HP's website and see if any of them do some good for you... Troubleshooting CD or DVD Drive Detection Problems ( http://tinyurl.com/3q64srg ). I know a lot of people like to uninstall HP Support Assistant (because it's bulky and useless), but you could also try that out and see if that can do anything for the problem.

edit mid-post: I just saw your thread from 6 or 7 months ago. About the only thing I'd say (if the hp troubleshooting link doesn't do much) with that is to give a new replacement drive a shot. Like your previous thread, I'm not sure if the 470US is the right one. Looks like there are 4 possibilities, HP G70-246US, HP G70-250US, HP G70-258US, and HP G70-460US. Can you confirm which one it is?

I have the HP G70-460US. I think I'm running the 32 bit windows 7. I did the troubleshooting but nada. Its still not showing up in the device manager. I'm gonna replace the dvd/rom drive. Where do you recommend I buy a new optical drive at? Frys? How much are they? What do I ask for , should I bring in the old the one to make sure its the right one.
    Thanks for your help bro.
BTW nice find on my old thread. Thats how long this thing has been broke.

I'd say ebay or an online store would probably be your best bet. Doing an initial search for even laptop cd drives laptop dvd drives is turning up nothing on Fry's or Microcenter's site so far. They're sorta a specialty item as a lot of the big electronics/computer stores don't really carry them (now if this were a desktop cd/dvd drive, of course they'd have dozens of them).

This sucker does look expensive though. Two links I've found are

    (1) http://www.mydvddrives.com/index.php?act=products&id=50873??
    price: $60 + $7 shipping
    (2)http://tinyurl.com/6d773y9 ,
price: $60 + free shipping (but from Singapore, so you'll be waiting a while longer).

On the 2nd link above, if you go with that one double check with the seller and give him what you gave me here HP G70-460US, etc. Must have been a while since I've bought a replacement laptop cd/dvd drive. Didn't think they were that expensive. Although it all depends how popular your model is too, I'd imagine this one would be more along the $30-$40 I was thinking if it were more supported on the replacement part market.

For those that have suggested Craigslist, I have a few questions...

    1) There are so many ads out there, how do I make mine stand out? Post social media links inside the ad itself or how to do it?

    2) I don't see many people looking for computer help, I thought there was a "looking for" section on Craigslist a while back, but I don't see it anymore?
