When I lived in Houton, some 8 years ago, the only place we could go out to for fun was the Williams Tower Fountain/Gallaria area, and Kima Boardwalk. So, in general Houson is a pretty bland/dry city. (No offense to you Houstonians). Maybe it's because I was a kid back then.

Shopping - go to the Galleria... and that's about it. It's the only place worth going to on a mini-trip... maybe Memorial City Mall, and maybe Highland Village too...

Astros - you can probably just walk up. Not too hard to get tickets at the box office, plus you avoid Ticketmaster's crappy "service" charges.

That area your hotel is in... is not such a great area. Definitely not scenic. I would suggest looking more closely at the Galleria area. Look on hotwire.com for good bargains.

For Tex-Mex - Lupe Tortilla or Pappasito's are the best in town. Anyone else want to argue, let's go meet in the parkin' lot...

galleria + ice rink
rodeo
galveston beach
jesse jones park (loved that place as a kid)
herman park
memorial park
etc.

apparently you weren't trying hard enough... but thanks for surmising our deficiencies

I would suggest the El Tiempo on Richmond, as well. it's only a stones throw from the Galleria...and is actually owned by Mama Ninfa's son. If you are there with family I would avoid going around happy hour on Thurs or Fri as it gets a bit crowded...

if you are going to an Astros game the Discovery Green is right down the street in front of George R Brown Convention Center, it has a playground and some water oriented fun (bring a swimsuit) that is geared towards to the kiddos. Considering a baseball game (esp. an Astros game) can be alot for a kid to handle, it would be a good place to go before, after or intermitanly during the game...

also, the Museum district is about 10 min. from there down mainstreet, it also has alot of kidcentric activities (children's museum, etc.)
