Well this year Morey put him in a position to play more rookies then he envisioned. Parsons is the one guy he immediately truly put his faith in as a rookie.
The fitting will be up to Lin. If he passes up open jumpers because he is not confident in his shot, he will not fit into any contending ball club. This is the NBA, you have to be able to shoot as guard. The only minor exception is Rondo, and he has to be all-world everything else to make up for the fact that teams give 6 feet of space when he's at the 3 point line.
IF we get to the playoffs with McHale as coach is an achievement in itself if you ask me. If he gets this team to the playoffs I would have to say then he's a good coach this is the youngest or second youngest team in the league. Championship coach... Meh...
Good thread. For all the people who are talking about substitution patterns... do you even watch other teams and see the line-ups they put out there at times? Did anyone see how Goran was utilized (or under-utilized) in the first 3 quarters of that game? Every coach and every team has their own inner workings and it is hard to understand from the outside looking in. Do people here put a premium on Francisco Garcia making a face cut on Dmo before the Dallas game and saying "that's what Shawn Marion is going to do to you tonight" to him while on scout team? No. Does the coaching staff? Yuuuuup. Even made it in the interview as being impressed by that. Go back in to the JVG and Adelman threads... people would b**** about their substitutions all the time. It's the easiest thing for a fan to b**** about, and it always seems to be the last scapegoat for any fan of any team to hate their coach.
We're not exactly competing for a championship and he is developing players adequately. For that purpose he is doing a fine job..the team is really young and inconsistent so i can understand the weird rotations to some degree. If we get a couple stars next to Harden then I think we will need a coach that can get them playing at a higher defensive level.
I don't think he is as bad as the LOF's think, or as good as some think. But here is my question. If we didn't get Harden, and were 30 games below .500, what would you be saying about him? We can't properly observe how good a coach is in practice or in the locker room, so we can only go by 2 things really. Substitutions and X's and O's Based on those 2, McHale is clearly not a COY candidate. Again I don't think he is as bad as others do, but I think he got lucky with Harden and is riding him for all he's worth, which I don't think is good for Harden's and the teams development going forward. I've said this before, but there are parallels to other young guys being ridden too hard by poor coaches and leading to bad results all around, ie. AI, T-Mac, VC etc.
Actually, the interviews make his subsitutions much more understandable. I feel he simply yanks players when he thinks they're not trying hard enough. They're doing stupid thing. They're not playing defense. The exception of course being Harden because like all star players, you don't yank them for anything.
I like his personality. If he'll play AB and Ohlbrecht a few minutes tomorrow night, I'll like his coaching more than I have been lately.
I agree. McHale has done an outstanding job with what he has had to work with. The players love playing for him and respect him. We should be one of the worst teams but we are considered an elite team. I do question his game management toward the end of games but not every game. I am still nor convinced we are playoff bound but if we get there we will see how he does.
McFAIL sucks and if we miss the playoffs, all of you will be on board with those of us that dislike his coaching ability! I certainly hope this young good team makes it, but it will be in spite of McFAIL, not because of him. The Lakers are in form, Golden State has an easy schedule, Utah may be falling, but DON"T COUNT OUT the Blazers and Mavericks if the Rockets continue to lose to below .500 teams as we have been recently.
Not having Harden and losing games would only solidify McHale's position as a coach because we are not even close to talented enough to win against 90% of the teams.
I'm sorry, I've been a Rocket fan since 91', but what does "garm" stand for? I know it has to do with this site...
That's where I disagree. If you're going to hold everyone accountable, you have to hold your star player accountable too.
