This is incorrect, the FBI director serves at the pleasure of the President. We would not want a J Edgar Hoover type, unaccountable to any elected authority. It seems as if Comey fancied himself as such.
Ahh, a new version of "why Trump fired Comey". And one that no one on the Trump team nor Trump has come up with yet. Let's see... there was the "because of handling of Clinton email" reason. And 'because of Rosenstein's letter" reason. And the "because of Russia reason" Trump later admitted. And then the "because he was crazy" reason. And now... "leaks" and "refused to publicly clear Trump" reason.

Assumes facts not in evidence. Trump has mentioned a handful of different reasons for the firing. Comey was mean to Hillary ... was the first one out of the gate which is about the biggest boldest lie Trump has ever told. FBI is in chaos. Rank and file have lost confidence in Comey. To remove the cloud of suspicion hanging over the White House.
This! People forget Trump was on Fox News proclaiming he sent investigators to Hawaii and he couldn't believe what they were finding. To this day, he has never shown all of the unbelievable things the investigators found. The same goes for the tapes. He doesn't have any tapes. If a guy will lie about crowd sizes, Ted Cruz's father and many other things that are easily disproved, I can't give him the benefit of the doubt. So, IMHO, Trump is lying.
I'm not the one making assumptions, that was a stated reason for his termination, you are the one assuming the stated reasons for his termination are false without anything of substance to back that assumption up. . Also no one ever said he was fired for "being mean to Hillary", that's just spin. Part of the stated reason he was fired was for his mishandling of that situation which is not "being mean to Hillary".
