Those of you who think this will blow over are so delusional it's astounding. Take a deep breath and think about it. Trump should have asked Comey to step down immediately. Firing him now throws an additional stench on the administration that won't go away. Trump isn't going to end well, whether after 4 years or sooner.
Covering up what? Firing the FBI director doesn't stop or even slow down investigations and there's legitimate cause to fire him for the way he mishandled the Clinton case which is back at the forefront again with him making more comments about it publicly. I don't really see how this could cover anything up.
It's all in the timing. If he fired himwhen he took over then his claims would have a lot more merit than firing him now when he's investigating Trump's cronies. All part of Trump's game play. He keeps dirt on people until they get close to having leverage on him then he fires on them. Trump is a pathological liar. He's about secrecy, diversions, and strong arm power tactics. We all know, well except for you people.
False testimony before Congress, this was beyond avoidable. There may even be some under the table agreement to not prosecute.
1) Comey did deserve to be fired. He badly mishandled both the Clinton investigation and the Trump investigation and directly influenced the election as a result. He then gave false testimony to Congress and created a HUGE talking point. He was melting down like Harden. 2) With that said, I believe the administration was just looking for an excuse so that can appoint a director that will end the probe. Comey, though clumsy, has proven to be someone who will pursue the truth and stand on principal. That was dangerous for Trump if there is any "there there." Now we will likely never know as a Trump appointee will quash the investigation.
Any bet on the Russia collusion investigation being dropped by the next FBI director? I have said it earlier and I am saying it again, this will not be water gate II and they will never be able to get to Trump. They might get several underlings like Flynn at best.
Many people think the investigation will eventually lead to Trump, making him Nixon II. If he did collude with the Russians, there will not be evidence of his direct involvement, if he did not collude with Russians, none of this matters anyway.
The guy did his job, and both Republicans and Democrats hated him for it. The politicization of the FBI is a major concern. I don't think there was any wrong doing by Comey in any of the two above mentioned investigations. Also, his lie was actually an overstatement. The moral of the story here: no good deed ever goes unpunished.
