i do not like carrot top for one reason. if you read Bill Hicks biography you will learn that he was a finalist to win a national comedy award not too long before he died and he lost out to freaking carrot top. that really pissed me off when i read that. especially since he was dying at the time. he deserved some recongnition.
I don't think many like Carrot Top anyway, regardless of whoever he might have cheated out of a national comedy award. He's not exactly the height of wit. And I, for one, never truly got into prop humor. Can you blame me?
Where the hell is Conan O'brien? And I wish that they'd specify: 100 greatest American comedians. Most of the British are much better than the majority of those listed here. Pathetic.
That guy's good. "One thing I like to do. I like to go to the video store. I go to the video drop off box. And I put my penis in that box and say to the help: Have you seen this? Is it any good?" Okay, that's from memory, but it's a good joke.
Okay, understandable, BUT: this kind of 'injustice' is what Bill Hicks' whole career was based on. If you don't get what's wrong with it, you don't get Bill Hicks. He EXPECTED that kind of ridiculous **** to happen. He EXPECTED to be ranked low. But most comedians know he kicked their asses. Among comedians in general I'd bet only Lenny Bruce (and maybe Richard Pryor) ranks above Bill Hicks.
Where are... John Leguizamo Steve Harvey Zach Galifianakis Jamie Foxx and How did some of these on the list make it there?
I humbly submit that anyone that thinks Dana Gould should be on this list is trippin, but comedy is subjective. Carlin lost me several years back with Jesus bashing, I just think he is too smart and too much of an observations specialist to delve into material that is outright offensive to a ton of people. A few years ago I did the HBO Aspen Comedy festival and Carlin did something that was not very cool. There were 2 shows scheduled to tape in the same venue but different times, George Carlins special, and HBO's Best of the Fest. Carlin did his show early and was not pleased with the audience, so after peeping our audience he did his special in front of them putting our taping 2 hours behind schedule and excluding some comedians from the show. Funny guy, but an inconsiderate Prick.
People on this list that I cant stand at all: George Carlin - Irritating as hell Jerry Sienfeld - Hated his show Ellen Degeneres - Whiney ass b**** Garry Shandling - Always looks like he is going to cry Colin Quinn - Most annoying person ever to live Wanda Sykes - WTF? Sandra Bernhard - Oh hell no People on this list rated too low: Gallagher - I still like to watch this guy Howie Mandel - I remember watching his stand up as a kid and loved it Billy Crystal - #39??? You have to be kidding me. Top 20 at the very least. Andy Kaufman - Guy was F-U-N-N-Y Robin Williams - Top 10 and maybe even Top 5 Eddie Murphy - His movie career has dropped off but in his prime he was awesome. He should also move up a couple of spots because he is related to Darkness. Bill Cosby - A definite top 5. Anyone that can make Moses and Chocolate Cake funny is ok in my book. I could probably recite many of his old stand up tapes right now. I love Chris Rock but he is no top 5. Maybe top 25 now and has potential to move up but right now he is ranked way too high.
Someone said they didn't get Woody Allen. If you hear his old comedy bits - the moose story is out there on Kazaa, sometimes - he's got great wit, great timing. Really professional. His three books are really funny, too. The movies don't really show how quick he was. You lose that with scripts, of course. Really great comics are impressive in how fast they can work a spur of the moment tangent to improve their bit. Their minds are alive, scintillating with brilliant energy. Bad comics just plod through what they rehearsed. They are brian dead. AB mentioned T.Shaun Shannon. That guy is really really funny. I've seen him do the same show a few times in a week and it was still funny with each trip. He worked the material a new way each night - he can read the crowd. If you ever get a chance to see him and his brother with the films that is a fun night.
AB, Long time, no hear. The Mrs. and I are kind of getting situated in Charlotte and we were wondering if you ever make it over this way? We would still love to catch you when you are over this way sometime. I know Atlanta, Augusta, Raliegh, Charleston and many other cities arent too far from here either so if you get in the vacinity you should let us know. I checked your website and it hasnt been updated in a while.
Oops - wrong button. I was just correcting "brian dead" for "brain dead" then though of "comedy zombies". Look who's brian dead. That's right. Me.
T. Sean Shannon's brother Charlie died recently of a heart attack, he was a really funny guy and helped me out a lot.
I went to high school in Houston with Charlie and he was a riot. Went to his funeral and T. Shaun had a tear-jerkingly sad/funny riff for his eulogy. He is missed.
They can't specify that, because it's not true. They have included Eddie Izzard and Billy Connolly. So apparently, this really is who they believe the 100 greatest comedians are.
