i totally agree.. I have a question. If Woody Allen is on this list how is Mel Brooks not on it? Robin Williams drug years were great. Here are my faves 1.Lenny Bruce(w/o him there might not be a Carlin)IMHO 2.Goerge Carlin 3.Richard Pryor 4.Chevy Chase(My name is Nostradamus.) 5.Dennis Miller 6.Sam Kennison 7.Andy Kaufman ... Dennis Leary Jim Breuer Mitch Hedberg
dang im suprised no one has noticed martin lawrence not being on there. he was def jam host you know.
incubus, I have no idea what your sig means but it is hilarious. Gets me every time. Personally I'd put Bill Hicks at the top of that list every time. Without Lenny Bruce there'd be no Bill Hicks (or Carlin or most of the comics of today), but without Woody Guthrie there'd be no Dylan. Also gotta give the love to Mitch Hedberg. I'd see him anytime (and have more than ten times). I think David Cross is WAY under-ranked here. His record, "Shut Up You ****ing Baby" is one of the best I've ever heard.
Sorry about that. I honestly don't know why I wrote that he was dead. Chalk that up to an honest mistake, quick typing, and not thinking. And yes, I have seen Pryor's standup. I think the man is hilarious. But I think Carlin is more hilarious. George Carlin has consistently been at the front of comedy, pushing the envelope, and making people laugh. Again, I apologize for the Pryor slip-up, and I get the feeling that it's going to effect my credibility. Still, however, Carlin should be number one, as far as I'm concerned.
With all due respect, you are outraged about Jim Belushi not making the list? I'll give you Lucille Ball and Red Skelton, but Jim Belushi? To paraphrase Allen Iverson...We're talking about Jim Belushi, man. Jim Belushi. Jim Belushi? Jim Belushi. Jim Belushi should come somewhere between Heinrich Himmler and and Dr. Benjamin Spock in the all-time comedians list. Is there another Jim Belushi you are thinking of maybe? One that did not make such comedy classics as "Curly Sue," "Blues Brothers 2000" and "Homer and Eddie?" Mango, are you like France with Jerry Lewis in that you see a hidden genius in Jim Belushi that literally no one else in the world identifies? If so, please explain. I keed, I keed....
I just saw Ellen's standup on HBO 3 weeks ago. She was amazingly funny. I think she gets a bad rap b/c of her failed sitcom.
Great points about Skelton and Ball. I agree. Any "greatest 100 comedians" that doesn't mention Ball is a joke.
How about Patton Oswalt, Dana Gould and Bob Odenkirk on the list? Gallagher ought to be drawn and quartered, so there's one spot one of these guys could take. As for the list, generally, I would have to go with Carlin. When Another Brother mentions Chrs Rock's body of work I have to laugh, frankly. Call me when Chris Rock has *40 years* of material that is still top of the line like Carlin does. I don't mean to denigrate Chris Rock, who is fabulous, but Carlin actually raised his game since the late 80's. I would rank any of Carlin's last 10 HBO specials with any comedian's body of work and that still leaves you with a career that was among the most influential for 25 years. At his best Pryor transcended stand-up comedy and I don't think anybody else on the list can say that, but this last run by Carlin puts him on top for me. I would like to give a special shout-out to Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner's 2000 Year Old Man bits from the 1960's. Awesome stuff.
I would argue that Chris Rock is ranked too high right now for the same reason you cite, his body of work I love Chris Rock, I came pretty close to being related to him through marriage, his Bigger & Blacker HBO special is one of the all time bests...but to me, to be a top 10 of any profession, you've got to have a body of work that consists of more than a couple of specials, some cameo movie roles, and an SNL gig.. I mean, did you see "Head of State" ? He may become a top 10 guy, but ask me in another 10 years and we'll see. If the list was, Top 100 ACTIVE Comedians Today, then yeah Chris Rock is top 5 material.
AB, I want to hear you on XM Comedy. Brian Regan is one of my favorite comedians. That "You Too" hooked me when I saw it a few years ago.
My top 10 (no order) 1. Richard Pryor 2. George Carlin 6. Steve Martin 7. Rodney Dangerfield 8. Bill Cosby 13. Robin Williams 19. Bill Hicks 28. Jack Benny 58. Larry "As long as I get 3 hours of sleep and a complete change of blood, I'm cool." Miller 101. Red Skelton Carlin would have to be my favorite. I have seen Ellen DeGeneres twice three years apart. Same f*cking show, both times.
My aunt met Carrot Top once. She was at the airport bar waiting for her plane, and he was sitting a couple seats away. She went and talked to him for a while. She says that he is a very "pretty" man. Says that you would never guess how feminine he is in real life. Guess you never can tell about some people.
I once caught a Carrot Top show in Vegas. At one point in the show he took off his shirt, and damn he was ripped. No kidding.
