Well we went to the demonstration. It was a very nice day to do so. I heard reports of 30,000 which sounds right to me. Many more marched than stayed around for the speeches of Congressman Gene Green and others. I got the impression many folks left early to pick up their kids from school. It was a very large demonstration for Houston, especially during a work day. People were very spirited. I think the GOP is not going to benefit from this attempt to have a wedge issue by having a ridiculous bill that made nurses, clergy and others into felons for feeding and sheltering these immigrants.. The Bigtex's and the Gwayneco,s of the world are going to vote GOP anyway and the GOP will probably lose the Latino vote on this issue as they did in California the last time they tried to make an issue of immigration. Maybe the GOP hopes that immigration will distract from the GOP Iraq debacle on which ABC news today now says 58% say was not worth it and 60% disapprove of Bush's handling of his job.
When, why and how would you, glynch and anyone else who is in favor of the kind of immigration we are now enjoying, put an end to illegal immigration?
The GOP hopes the immigration issue will : 1. Supply corporate interest with cheap labor. 2. Support Social Security for boomers 3. Add 11 million new pro-life voters to the polls. But where in the world did they get the 'learn to speak English' requirement? Is that mentioned anywhere in the constitution, cause if it is, I missed it. Maybe it's in the Bill of Requirements.
If you're talking about what I think you're talking about... isn't that a bill sponsored by Kennedy and McCain? Is Kennedy working for the GOP these days? Is McCain really working for the GOP these days?
I frankly don't view stopping current immigration of whatever kind as anywhere close in importance to dealing with such problems as global warming, new energy sources, stopping warmongering, providing insulin, heart medicines and other medical care for the 40 million uninsured Americans and a host of other problems. Immigration is a phoney crisis and the economy was running quite fine under Clinton with the existing immigration system. To be sure, in fairness to the undocumented, they deserve rights after all their good work for America. This is largely a wedge isssue and attempt, like anti-affirmative action politics, to appeal to racists, a key GOP constituency. The GOP also trots out the occasional Clarence Thomas, Condoleeza Rice or Alberto Gonzalez to make the educated and more urbane GOP'ers feel a bit less squeamish about the party's coded appeals to racists.
nice family guy refrence.... i don't really assume that all 4.5million are against it, its called exaggeration. but lets look at the real poll numbers and apply them. last i saw, it was 62% so lets run with that number. 5 million people in the dfw area, thats 3.1 million against illegal immigration amnesty. that leaves 1.9 million for it, the majority still favor not allowing the failed senate bill.
