Why did Duncan have an off night? Was it the numerous defensive schemes the Lakers threw at him? The solid D that Shaq and Horry played? No.

I'm not sure if everybody here saw, but I could've sworn I saw Bernie Fryer sky to swat a few of Duncan's shots. Most of you don't realize it because they're sending out microradiowaves into your brain to block it out.

Block what out you ask? My point exactly.

lol, cat complaining about the refs again. it's like clockwork. lakers win a game, cat goes "THE REFS FIXED THE GAME!!!!!" in cat world, the lakers have never played a good game, and the league always giftwraps their wins for them. lol!

cat has to be joking with all of us, nobody can be that biased.

I thought the refs did a bad job today, but the Spurs definitely blew this game on their own.

They had Shaq out for a significant amount of time, and Kobe hobbling, and they still couldn't pull it out.

If Duncan could get some help as in his teamates nailing some jumpers, mebbe they coulda extended their lead and wouldna have much to worry about in the fourth.

No way will this be a sweep. Spurs will push the Lakers.

But to blame this solely on the refs is ridiculous.

    Cat,

Don't you ever think that maybe you lose a little credibility when all you do is b**** and moan about the officiating when YOUR team loses a game?

I mean back in the beginning of the season, when the Rockets lost games, it was the officials faults.

Saints lose, officials fault, you even think they deserve to have objects thrown at them as if this were a soccer match.

I mean, I'm positive there are more instances in which you whine about the refs, but I'm too lazy to actually go back a year and read through the playoff threads.

I guess my point is, why don't you just learn to blame the players involved in the game instead of the officials. The refs were letting the players play, that's what most players and coaches like in the playoffs.

It's not like the Lakers had 20 more FT attempts than the Spurs, they both went to the line around the same amount of times.

Anyway, I know you'll continue to cry about the refs and refuse to give any credit to the team you hate the most, but I just felt like commenting on how predictable and boring your "refs suck" posts are...

It shouldn't have come down to that.

SA had command of the game the entire way, and didn't hit open shots down the stretch.

SCF: I suppose because they have some star power, and play exciting basketball.

BGM: I would love to talk about the players, but I just don't see how I can. When I think of the game today, the only images that immediately come to mind are Shaq just clobbering Malik Rose, and Robert Horry throwing Tony Parker to the floor. I know it's a pattern for me, but when I reflect on all those games, it's a constant pattern of BS officiating as well. And I do tend to root for small market teams...

Actually, though, I can think of one other thing today besides the officials... Popovich pulling Duncan for a minute in the 4th, and the Lakers getting six automatic points to go from down 4 to up 2. That was pretty stupid. I still think the officials would've found a way, but we'll never know...

Gee.....I wonder if the fact that his dad died this week may have had something to do with it?

Btw...Shaq played 35 minutes, Bryant 38. By comparison, David Robinson played 0.

Damn, Cat, I knew you liked the Spurs, but you take "homerism" to a whole new level.

If you looked up "homer" in the dictionary, I bet your picture would be in there.

So, let me get this straight...every time the Lakers play the Spurs in the playoffs, the Lakers always get the calls??

Could it be that the Spurs lost to the Lakers because

    1) The game was in LA and not in the Alamodome?
    2) The Lakers were more rested than the Spurs?
    3) The Spurs played without David Robinson?
    4) The Lakers have the 2 best players in the NBA in Kobe and Shaq?
    5) The Spurs are softer than my pillow and toilet paper combined?

Maybe the game was poorly officiated, but it is highly doubtful that was the reason for the Spurs to lose when you have those 4 other reasons.

You know who you remind me of, Cat with this constant bellyaching about officiating? These hicks from this church that I was umping a softball game of theirs several years ago. They just absolutely got their asses hammered by a better team 22-5, but they wanted to say that they lost because of 2 close calls I made that went against them. Yea, like me and the guy umping behind the plate are responsible for the other team's top 4 or 5 batters going 4 for 4 against their pitching or me and the guy umping home plate are extra fielders for that other team and the hicks are having to play against 12 defenders instead of 10.

Cat - you're a smart guy....don't be like those damn f*cking hicks who thought that the umps had "something again us." (that was their words to one of my best friends - the President of the league)

Sometimes I don't get this BBS. Do you really think that the officials won't call a fair game? These are professionals just like any other worker...and they'll call what they see. Just like any other job...their job is on the line. Officials are just like you and me.

Which brings me to my next point...

Officials don't win and lose games...players do. The Lakers are better than the Spurs, and if you don't see that....I'm sorry. I respect everything the Spurs have done with the lack of talent they have. Heck I think Tim Duncan is probably the best player in the NBA with his scoring, rebounding, and involving his teammates.

REALITY CHECK: Just face it...TD, Tony "Jesus" Parker, Malik Rose, Antonio "underachieving" Daniels and the other role players are not going to cut it against a champion.

Well, hours later, I'd first like to apologize to everyone for my overreaction... that loss hurt more than anything in a long while, and I needed to vent my frustrations. (breaking my remote should've been enough, though  )

I still think the officiating sucks, but it often does when you play LA and especially at Staples. It was a bad excuse, considering TD couldn't get a shot to go all night long, and our role players missed about ten wide open threes. We had chances, and didn't execute, even with the officials. I'm a true fan, so I won't give up, and instead it's just time to move on and go win game 2. This stings worse than any other game in quite a while, but it's time to move on. A split in LA, the goal, is still possible.

Again, sorry to everyone who witnessed that earlier. It was just my way of venting frustrations, and considering the Lakers history with officials, it's always even more difficult to accept poor officiating when you play them. Anyway, time for Game 2... it can't get here fast enough.

    GO SPURS GO

That's inexcusable Cat. I've never overreacted after a Rockets loss before.

Wow Cat, I'm quite impressed. Seriously, way to be with acknowledging your overreaction.

I still think you're not giving the Lakers enough credit for playing an entire quarter without Shaq and still keeping it close but at least you admit that it wasn't all on the refs. :)

    The Cat,

These Tim Duncan poor shooting nights in the playoffs against LA are becoming the norm, instead of the exception. In Game 3 and 4 last year, Duncan was shut down and today he was 9-30. Horry defends him well, and when the Lakers put Shaq on Duncan late in games, Duncan always seems to come up short. I know you're an extremely biased Spurs homer, but give some credit to the Lakers D: They were #1 in the NBA in the regular season, totally shut down the Spurs offense last year in the playoffs, and did it again today. Duncan is not unstoppable like a mid 90's Hakeem or a current Shaq. You play good defense on him with good personnel, and you can contain him. He seems scared of Shaq at times.

The Lakers manage to contain Duncan without giving up too many open looks to the Spurs gunners. That's why they've beaten them 9 out of 10 now, not because of the freakin refs, the same refs who called 25 fouls on LA today and 20 on SA.

Spurs had no excuse to lose today. Shaq and Kobe both out with injuries for a long stretch, Kobe 3-10 from the line, etc. I know the Spurs built in excuse for this year is David Robinson being hurt. Yeah, that Admiral is really something against elite Centers like Hakeem or Shaq in the playoffs!

Hey, gotta give the Spurs one thing. At least they kept it close today and competed. Hoping for more of the same the rest of the series so the games are more fun to watch than last year. I don't see any other team besides SA who is going to beat the Lakers this year and SA's chances don't seem all that great right now.

Please though, lose the whining about the refs. I know you loathe the Lakers but they are pretty damn good. They have arguably the best Center of all time and one of the best 2 guards in the NBA and a very good supporting cast. They are flat out BETTER than SA when they play their best bball. Surely, you can't argue with that.

dylan: the way the Spurs shot, LA probably could've played Hunter, Richmond, George, Madsen, and Medvedenko and stayed in the game. :)

That really sucks, though. Before Shaq left the game, I was really worried... the Spurs still couldn't buy a basket, and the Lakers came out of the gate absolutely on fire. I was worried that the Lakers were on their way to a 5-10 point lead, but then Shaq had to leave, and that was a big break. Every team has those over the course of a game and series, and it's sad that the Spurs couldn't take advantage.

But, none of this will matter if the Spurs take game 2, and that's all I'm really trying to concentrate on right now. After the game, it seemed like the Spurs had blown their chance at taking one in LA, but the more I think about it I remember that the Lakers never really looked that great in the Portland series either. If the Spurs come out and play their game (and remember, Duncan should be due), they'll have a good chance Tuesday.

I only read tidbits of this thread and don't really care much except for the part which you said something to the likes of you don't think the Spurs will win anymore?

Does this mean you're backing out of our bet? Or are you just going to send me the $20 early?

just to point out, but the lakers only got one more ft than the spurs, and that is with the four fts the lakers got from intentional hacks to end the game. the lakers actually got called for 4 more fouls than the spurs, and again, that is including the two intentional hacks at the end of the game, so realistically the spurs only had 18 fouls called on them. on the lakers home court. and that is blatant favoritism of the refs? damn, i would hate to see it when the refs are against the lakers then.
