Lol at American companies trying to cash in on limits. Thank goodness there aren't things like this here. Although at school it's a 100mb limit, which is just annoying.
That's right Comcast.... FEAR Netflix, Revision3, etc... They will kill your on demand business, and in the long term... all you'll have is an internet access business. Better cripple it now.
And this after telecommunications companies were given a 200 BILLION DOLLAR tax cut with the intent to invest that money in new broadband infrastructure. Which americans will never see. A big **** you to all the telecom companies.
I pay for an unlimited connection right now(transfer wise), they have their rates based on speed. i use around 400GB a month in transfer, if they plan to cut back how much bandwith i use i expect to pay less than i do right now, not more. If i continue to use it the same that would add an additional $225 a month. I might as well just get a T-1. I kinda wish i was in a contrract with them instead of month to month, it would be much easier to fight.
Well these companies are trying to avoid having to upgrade infrastructure, and instead increase profits. They are trying to ease the internet back into the bad old days, where cell phone usage currently is now - paying by the MINUTE. Remember when AOL first came on the scene? And Compuserve? And Prodigy? Maybe some of you don't remember those days, but back then it was a race to see how fast you could get online, read your emails, and get back off as fast as you could, in order to preserve your minutes. People were paying a fee NOT to use the internet. Once ISP's came along and said 'Just pay a flat monthly fee and use it as much as you want.', that was when the internet took off and became the integral part of all of our lives it has become. But it pisses a lot of companies off, because they feel that they should be skimming more cash from such a now-necessary thing. And this is how it will start. You continue paying your regular fee, but your data becomes limited. As more and more users come online, your allowance will shrink, and pretty soon, they will start charging by the minute again. The company which stands up and says 'NO!' to this BS is going to become everyone's darling and steal the whole market. Are you listening, AT&T ?
If they do, that'd be cool but the last time I had them they SUCKED ASS. They better make speeds faster, that 1.5 mbps, 3.0mbps, and 6.0 mbps **** is slow, well to me at least.
At least we don't have it like Australians... http://my.bigpond.com/internetplans/broadband/cable/plansandoffers/default.jsp $30 bucks a month for 200MB(that's right megabytes) cap And that's their "fast plan" Up to 8Mbps/128kbps Their high speed is $140 per month if you want a 60GB cap They charge $150 for every GB over the limit
Yeah well down in Australia I've got a 50gb/month limit for $60 a month, capped to 128k/128k after that limit. The great thing is, this is a really good deal down here
Hey hey, for us former 1.5 mbps'ers... 6 mbps is pretty sweet . For now, AT&T's been pretty solid. I haven't kept up with the whole cable vs DSL deal but the companies that offer faster speeds generally have a a ton of customer service issues like Comcast. Sure they might offer 12-20 mbps, but is it worth it? Really? I'd like to hear from anyone that currently has a higher mbps package with Comcast.
Ive got it, the internet hasnt been an issue. The few times it has gone down it was quickly restored. Ive had ALOT more problems getting them to fix my issues with PPV, the whole inDemand package they have is unavailable. I keep getting 1102 error codes when I try to choose one. So far the two techs we have had out have failed to fix it. The third one says he knows what the problem is, it is an issue with the junction points right upstream of us. When will they fix that? god only knows. Good thing we dont wan to use it very often. IME, the whole horrible customer service thing I keep hearing around here is WAY overblown. Ive had little problem getting in touch with them and getting quick resolutions on my internet service.
Is it really worth it? Yeah, I used to have 1.5 megabyte DSL back in 05. Got Time Warner in 06 and that was a huge difference, and they just offered around 5.0 mbps at the time.
My parents have the AT&T package and it seems to be nothing but a pain in the ass. Screens going blue, having to restart all boxes, internet going down, router getting blown during a storm and 5 hours for a tech to fix the problem. Constant lag while trying to change channels, then locks on one channel and you can't change it. Fawk that noise. Comcast sucks, but until FIOS arrives here I'll stick with it. They recently upped my internet speeds so I'm happy with that.
http://www.couchmercenaries.com/News/comcast_notsofast.htm Looks like the FCC is trying to stop Comcast from doing this.
