They are definitely NOT a slow team by any means. Don't look into that Notre Dame too much because UM won half of the game for ND by themselves by fumbling stupidly. They still have the athletes on defense and offense, its just that their QB right now (Steven Threet) doesn't exactly have the quick feet of a Pat White (although he has deceptive straight line speed) in order to run the spread right now, and most importantly, they just don't have the right offensive linemen for what they wanna do (not saying they're necessarily bad either). Plus they are young and inexperienced. Thats too bad because if they had a better O-line, Sam Mcguffie could explode (literally). However, I do think Rich Rod is being a little arrogant right by not using more power formations, which actually e so far has netted them positive yards every time, so I don't see why they won't do that more often.
I'm just thankful that I went to a school that is able to receive national attention rather than going to a school where sports is highly regarded as a non-factor and watching from afar a team that is full of hippies. Thank you.
I'm interested in seeing how far tech can get up there. We have Nebraska than AtM. With a couple upsets we might sneak into the top 3. Its a thing of beauty watching this offense click. Best combo of running/passing that Ive seen from Tech. Crabtree should be the 1st wr taken in the draft imo
Jeremy Maclin is pretty good too. Are they both system receivers though? None of those Spurrier receivers (I guess with the possible exception of Ike Hilliard) turned out to be worth much in the big leagues.
I havent had a chane to see Maclin to much. I think hes a true sophmore though so hed be coming out in 2010. in terms of crabtree ya his numbers are going to be inflated playing at tech but you can tell hes loaded with talent. He is great after the catch rarely lets the first man get him down and can turn a 10 yard pass into 50. I've seen him projected as an top 10 pick by virtuarly draft expert. Watch him a little in the coming weeks. I cant even remember techs last 1st round pick but im guessing its been like 15 yrs. Which is pretty amazing considering that tech has been a decent program
Its a crime to blame the "system" on Crabtree and Macklin, but in terms of pure talent Macklin definitely has the edge due to his size and relative speed. Now, I do think they are somewhat overrated in terms of their speed because neither of them are really outright burner. But right now, the top overall WR prospects are Heyward from Maryland (who runs about a 4.2-4.3 with track speed) and Percy Harvin (same deal).
Unfortunately, Maclin's a redshirt sophomore (he blew an ACL on what would've been his true freshman year)... he's probably gone.
