Props to UT, but as a UT fan when they aren't playing Mizzou, I still think they have a lot to prove against Oklahoma State. The reason I was so frustrated last night wasn't the loss -- of course Texas has more talent. It's how Mizzou lost that annoys me to no end. If you play Texas, you can expect a steady dose of two things. 1) Jordan Shipley and 2) bubble screens within five yards of the LOS. Unlike OU, CU and other teams which limited the UT offense, Mizzou did not double Shipley and for some bizarre reason continued to give the UT receivers 10+ yard cushions, after which they were nickeled and dimed to death. Now, is it that simple to shut down UT? No, even Greg Davis can make adjustments. But Pinkel/Missouri absolutely played right into Texas' hands and didn't even try to take them out of their comfort zone. They insisted on playing deep zone... against a team known around the world for its reluctance/inability to attack down the field. Just unreal. Don't get me wrong, I congratulate UT for a big win. But I want to see them win every game they play from here on out, and I'm interested to see how they fare against a coach that isn't a braindead moron. Also, I know it doesn't matter, but keeping Alabama ahead of Texas after yesterday is just hypocrisy at its finest.
Yep. Take away Shipley like OU did and see what else Texas can beat you with on offense. I was wondering what in the world the D coordinator for mizzou was thinking. Granted, Texas is the better team and has more talent, but geez at least double team Shipley and be careful punting to him. A simpleton fan could tell you that much.
OSU is still a very good team without Bryant, but it's not just the W/L I'm interested in -- it's also whether Colt and the UT offense are truly back. I think it's safe to say the offense that showed up against OU is not going to win a national championship game, even if it can get through a down year in the Big 12. They certainly looked great last night, but some of that had to do with the fact that Gary Pinkel makes Gary Kubiak look like a brilliant gameday coach by comparison (see post above). Want to see how UT looks on the road against a competent team not coached by Gary Pinkel before I officially believe their O has turned the corner.
If they take away Shipley and see if Texas can run on them or take a chance and see what colt and the other receivers can't do then they could at least make it close.
The poll is an aggregate of individuals. Lots and lots of voters dropped Alabama, and Texas made up lots of ground in the polls. In the AP, Alabama fell from #1 to #2, and in both polls, Texas picked up sevearl 1st place votes. I don't see a problem with that. These are incremental moves - Texas looked bad for several weeks to fall from #2 to #3. It will take time for them to move up too.
I don't really agree with that. Texas looked bad against Wyoming, but fairly solid against Tech and dominant against UTEP (even considering the opponent). The Texas "overrated" talk only happened after CU hung around for a while and then the slugfest with OU. Alabama has now had two consecutive very sluggish games, just like UT -- and neither opponent was the caliber of OU. Yet voters did not drop Alabama to the extent they did Texas. Yes, you could argue that Alabama had a more impressive OOC run in September than Texas, but then why not move them ahead of Texas then? It's clear moving Alabama ahead of Texas had less to do with Bama's performance and more to do with Texas' less-than-impressive wins against CU and OU. I know it's irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but I think Mack was dead on with his SEC analogy. When a Florida/Alabama has a game like UT/OU last week, a certain segment of voters just considers it a typical SEC bloodbath. UT doesn't get that benefit of the doubt.
But Alabama did not suddenly jump Texas overnight in Week 5 or whenever. They gained ground early by beating ranked teams and looking impressive in doing so (VaTech, Old Miss) while Texas was playing scrubs. Then they kept rising because Texas looked bad in several games (Tech included - Texas was favored, at home, by 20 I think). This week, Texas made a huge chunk of that ground up - it was the first week where you could definitely say Texas looked better than Alabama. If it happens again next week, Texas will probably be above Alabama again. That's exactly how polls are supposed to work.
BCS - October 25, 2009 1 Florida 2 Alabama 3 Texas 4 Iowa 5 USC 6 TCU 7 Boise State 8 Cincinnati 9 LSU 10 Oregon 11 Georgia Tech 12 Penn State 13 Virginia Tech 14 Oklahoma State 15 Pittsburgh 16 Utah 17 Ohio State 18 Houston 19 Miami (FL) 20 Arizona 21 West Virginia 22 South Carolina 23 Notre Dame 24 California 25 Mississippi Looking good for TCU! Might end up top 3 or even higher. Still have another qualiy win left if they get pass Utah. Sucks for Boise St. though, they will probably run the table but go no where for a chance to prove themselves
Really tired of people lamenting about UTEP. We're 6-1 and ranked #15. I'm happy and don't regret a single thing that has happened so far this year. This entire season is a blessing.
Im not really complaining, just one of those things that makes you think what if... Im happy with 6-1 and number 15, Im sure we will build on this season for next year too
