Having Oklahoma win out raises our BCS #'s on account of OU having a far superior strength of schedule. Aggy wins against Army and Citadel do nothing for us.

Sam, you brought the dead horse back to life to beat it some more. and you're sarcastic, condescending tone is doing a bad job of making up for your lack of facts on your side.

you are amazingly wrong on the ou issue since the coaches have actually said they went away from a conservative, playing not to lost style to a more attacking style. you seem to have no comprehension (or at least won't admit it because it would weaken your point) of the fact that everyone "takes what the defense gives them" on any given play, but some people force the defense to make much harder choices on what they will give. having to choose between a deep fly pattern, an intermediate post, and the TE running a drag 6 or 7 yards deep and then taking whichever the defense gives is a lot harder than having to choose to give up a 2 yard out that you can tackle immediately. GD made the defense give us exactly what the defense wanted us to take. in games like last night, we force them to make much harder choices and when a qb recognizes the weakness, it's a big play or one of 4 fairly long TD passes. that's the difference.

i think everyone thinks davis pretty much called a good game yesterday. just because no one tripped over themselves to announce it on here in the face of the horrible defense and thrilling comeback is no reason to start the debate all over again. we seem to be able to admit that greg davis can call good games. you can't seem to admit the extremely recognizable pattern he had throughout his career of going into the fetal position in every big game against a good defense. and that's pretty much all that needs to be said. please don't turn every UT football thread for the rest of the season into an endless argument between you and a few other posters where no one changes their mind. that's cool for the D&D and all where that's all everyone does, but lets leave it out of football threads.

    Good post.

Admittedly hard to say... but do you think GD's play calling on Staurday was a result of being in a hole early on?

You admitted last week that you hated the guy, would always hate the guy, and would never give him any credit, ever, no matter what. What's the point of arguing with you on this?

I didn't read your post but I'm going to guess that it's chock full of references to OU games past, why this is relevant to saturday's game (or the game before that, or the fact that throwing a deep pass into a 25 mph headwind or a 3 deep zone is inadvisable) is not clear to me.

I thought Davis called a good game. I realy liked him using the extra blocker a lot more a going between the tackles more. Like to see more of it.

And despite Charles and Selvin's fumbling issues, they both to be look just fine running between the tackles. I really like Charles style, he is North South 1st, than can break tackles strait out or spin in tight space. Selvin who I still like, I more often see get caught for negative plays taken wide.

But please RB coach, get those guys the Tiki Barber training video for turning a fumble prone guy into an iron hands guy. The tailback fumbling problem has been ridicolous--and Charles is one of them.

And Sam, the DC's deserve a lot of crit last week. Harrell was way too comfy and for too long we had too many running game defensing LBs on the field instead of moe Dbs or speed lBs. Also, needed try more stunts and get more speed rushers too.

My ladyfriend came over right after Tech made it 21-0.

Looks like I missed a great comeback, but I was preoccupied. I was fully expecting to see a horrible score in Sunday's sportspage, and I was pleasantly surprised.

I was surprised UT played with 4 Defensive linemen on any plays where Tech needed more than 2 yards.

wouldnt it just matter what the ranking for the team is. the bcs ranking takes everything into account including strength of schedule.

    or course not, because...

you've taken a mostly offhand joke about my greg davis feelings and turned it into your end-all be-all "i'm going to up my hands over my ears and scream 'la-la-la i can't hear you'" defense against having to argue anything substantive in this debate. you've been amazingly childish and petty during this whole thing.

have you really found that Major, Pued, and I, through our 22,000+ combined posts on this bbs, are just irrational scapegoaters and not people who usually bring facts and logic to an argument? because according this argument you have, which is kind of amazing.

I'm not going to scream "I can't hear you" - I answered all of your points in the other thread; there's no point in discussing the 2000 Oklahoma game now because it is of no relevance. You and others have said how much you hate Greg Davis time and time again, so I take this for what it is.

The point I made is pretty simple: Greg Davis is not perfect and never has been, but then again neither is anyone, and I don't think you guys appreciate the magnitude of his accomplishments while at the same time you over-exaggerate the volume of his failures. Davis' record speaks for itself, and cumulatively and relatively it is among the very best in the business - and that is not all due solely to talent.

A lot of the criticism of him is inconsistent and doesn't hold up to the light of day when closely examined, like for example, criticizing Texas for not throwing deep balls into the wind after a tough win vs. Nebraska or for not throwing the ball into a three deep zone that Ohio State was using (especially after Garrett Wolfe torched them with passes in the flats the previous week).

If that's what you call being childish or irrational, then fine F4P, have at it. But I've said my peace, you and the rest of you guys can keep on b****ing and mouthing the same cliches about East West passing or citing the Oklahoma game this year as some sort of devastating indictment in your infinite wisdom. The rest of us will just enjoy the ride.

Sam, the fact we are playing more I and power formations is somewhat of a vindication of what I was saying. Should have planned much more of it the minute VY declared.

Those of you worrying about the BCS, forget it. WVU-LOU will take care of each other. But if either team runs the table, they deserve a shot over any 1 loss team. Their conference is not the WAC or CUSA. They are not great but solid, the top of their conference beat on the ACC for instance. The winner of both of these games still have other losable games.

Honestly I don't think we would deserve to be ahead of a 1-loss Florida if they run the table and beat a 1-loss Auburn or Ark in their final. I wouldn't complained if the voters had us enough ahead, but if we didn't, those are the breaks. By all account if TOSU beats Michigan and there is an open 1 loss spot (LOU, WV both lose), it would seem logical for them to have it rather than two teams that lost to that #1 team (UT, Mich).

The other iffy situation is the Mich-OSU loser. Say Michigan wins. Would TOSU still be head of us or Florida? You have to weigh the fact they (TOSU) handled us at home versus the effect of a late season loss. If it was a tough close loss, TOSU is going to have a case for a rematch as they might fall to only the 2 or 3 spot.

So Texas has to win out, #1. If we get the breaks to get in a NC game, fantastic. But if we don't, and probably won't, after that it doesn't matter. We are either in the BCNC game (if really, really lucky), another BC game, or a lesser bowl. Why bother caring whether we are #4 in the BCs or #6, or whether we play Boise, ND or Mich (if they lose to TOSU) or anyone else. When we played the only really, really, good team on our schedule we got beat soundly. That can't change until Jan because their are no other legit top 10 teams in our conference. We should have beefs with no one for where we are at.

DS, somebody who has been doing some analysis last week claims that the Longhorns run better in the shotgun than out of the I Formation.
    http://rpongett.phpwebhosting.com/ut-nu.html

EDIT: the same analysis is up for this week

Runs out of the I formation: 4.2 ypc
Runs out of the 3 WR set 5.8 ypc
    http://www.rpongett.phpwebhosting.com/ut-tt.html

However I was not unsurprised that they played it more this week: play keepaway from TT is 'the book' on how to beat them, of course fumbleitis by Charles and young didn't help in that regard (I think it also shows why Charles isn't quite ready for prime time yet too)

Overall though I don't think these numbers reflect that the longhorns should run more conservative offense - especially coupled with the progress in the passing game. They seem to refelct the exact opposite.

i was gonna respond, but maybe we should just agree to disagree and, much like the shortcut the simpson's took to itchy and scratchy land, "let us never speak of it again."

Couple issues. Are the shotgun numbers inflated by longer distance downs and the I formation deflated by goalline and shorter distance. If you can run for 4.2 yards when the defense knows you are running, that is very good. Imagine if UT had worked more this spring a developed their FB or two TE sets more.

I make the same analogy with SC last year. When the going got tough they turned to LenDale in a power set, despite Bush having a better YPC. I suspect Bush versus LenDale, like running out of the gun versus the I (or two TE sets), has a much higher likelihood for negative plays despite some big plays to improve the average. It is much easier sustain a drive when you go 4-5, 4-5, 4-5, than -2, -2, 25.

Last year we shared the rock with 3 guys with not good fumble histories, this year with two. Would Charles fumble % go down with more carries, very possible. IMO more reps would probably lead him to a better feel and less forcing of plays, but this is speculation. In truth I would have wanted both JC and Selvin to get more carries this year.

Except: 1) we don't know how well the power offense would have worked had we started gearing for it in practice and personelle for it in March+; 2) the key game of the whole season was going to be one of our freshman QBs 2nd game ever. I would have say retool and play for power early season, then get more aggressive in the passing game as the season went on. The way it turned out was our young QBs worst game was only his 2nd game, and it may very well determine the fate of the 06-07 national champion.
