I'll never for the life of me understand what a "gimmick" offense means.

Isn't the point of an offense is to put the points up on the board?

Tech always has one of the top offenses in the country every season.

I dream one day that the Texans will have a "gimmicky' offense as good as Techs.

Oh man, don't tease us Longhorn fans like that. "Fire Greg Davis" is a river that runs deep, deeper now that Vince has moved on to make miracles out of nothing elsewhere.

I'm both a TCU fan and an Aggie fan. So I feel fine. I mean, we did hold you to 3pts for a win this season. :D

If you are coming out in 4 wide in the redzone 90% of the time... Thats a gimmick. If you have QBs breaking records like its their job then not even getting drafted. Thats a gimmick. If your offensive stats are declining because people are figuring out the offense. Thats a gimmick. You can run on for a long time, sooner or later physical football is gonna cut you down...

You could say what texas ran last year was a gimmick and they won a national championship. The only thing that matters is scoreboard and leech turned that tech program around.

sounds like a great offense to me.

I'm not suprised that Leach's name is in the hat for the Miami job. He's regarded as one of the best offensvie minds in college football while using this gimmick offense.

I never said it wouldnt work in the ACC. Should be "dangerous". Still a gimmick though.

Was it a gimmick when OU used it to beat FSU for the national title? If its such a gimmick then why are so many teams adding parts of his offense to their playbook?

As an Aggie, I would love to see him leave because, quite frankly, they've owned us under Leach. Since my wife and many of her friends graduated from Tech, it has been a rough stretch.

With that being said, if I were Leach, I'd stay in Lubbock. He has that town wired. All he has to do is keep winning at the same rate and contend for conference titles. At Miami, he has to win conference titles and contend for National titles, a lot more pressure. I guess it depends on what his goals are.

Is it a gimmick to be in shotgun all the time? Are the spread-option / zone-read offenses gimmicks?

The Tech offense is genius and consistently plays above its talent level. Can more talented football teams shut it down? Of course - that's the case for ALL offenses!

As someone else said, the point of an offense is to move the ball and score points. Against teams of similar talent level, it is a virtually unstoppable offense when it has the right players (QB is critical). There's nothing gimmicky about it. It doesn't run trick plays or anything like that. It's just a pass-oriented offense.

His offense, gimmick or not, is fun to watch and obviously puts points on the board. Should be interesting to see what Miami can do with it, if this is true.

But, I don't think the offense's ONLY job is putting points on the board. You have to maintain long drives and keep your defense (and the other team's offense) off the field too. Not saying you can't do that with the 'spread' offense, but Leach seems to enjoy scoring as fast as possible.

I think if he incorporates some more conventional plays into his offense, Miami could become a powerhouse again.

Just not sure if he has the right personality to be the coach at Miami. Those guys may run all over him, ala Switzer at OU back in the day.

I think a "gimmick" offense is anything that works at one level but not at another level, like the wishbone or the run & shoot. Any time you do something over and over and over again is pretty much a gimmick. Hell, Houston pro football teams have a long line of gimmick offenses. In the 70's, it was the "give it to Earl and get the %#@* out of the way" offense. In the 80's and early 90's, it was the run and shoot. With the Texans, it's the "Carr to AJ on the crossing route for 5 yards" offense.

I don't understand this thread. Hello!?! Mike Leach is not the new head coach for Miami. Maybe he will be. Maybe he won't be. But anything definitive is ridiculous.

I have to disagree. I hope I don't have to explain the difference between Lubbock, TX and Southbeach, Miaimi.

I agree that he'll have a lot more job security at Tech but I believe he'll have a bigger chance of winning big at Miami. He'll never win the recruiting battle against UT, OU, maybe Nebraska and A&M. At Miami, he will be at the premier school in the ACC. If recruiting doesn't take a big hit, he'll have recruits he couldn't have dreamed of at Tech.

Most of the stuff around is only a rumor without a source...that's why it is recommended to provide a source, if not, that is what is frowned upon...Is he the new head coach, not yet, so the title may be misleading...

I agree, he would be stupid not to comtemplate, and not go, if true...I'm sure TT will be fine with someone currently on the staff to run the offense...

ESPN has this to say, nothing about Leach...
    Rutgers coach says no...

Please let this happen. I'm a horn alum/fan but I also like the U, despite their conduct. This would make Miami ridiculously scary. Leach's offensive mind with top notch florida athletes and he could hire a big time DC and have a plenty solid defense to go with his offense. Leach at miami would be like Spurrier at Fla imho.

Plus the pirate goes to the beach, where he belongs. ARRRRRRRRRR.

It does suck for tech, but you guys had to know you are a stopping ground until the big time programs come calling. Doesn't suck for the rest of us playing them in the big 12 though :).

As a Tech alumn, this is definitiely very ungood news. Word out of Lubbock is its pretty much a done deal. Leach was there #2 guy, and when the Rutgers HC turned down the job (speculation) Leach became el numero uno.

Its going to suck, but Ive heard the following names mentioned:

Art Briles (has ties to TTU when he was an assistant a few years back)
Mike Price - Head Coach for UTEP

There may be some other names floating around out there, but these are the ones to the best of my knowledge.

I wouldnt mind the HC for TCU.
