Thats my impression as well. Basically fly to Seattle put a little scare and get a little bit more money nice vacation for the Mrs. I don't see him leaving but if he does its defintely going to be in the Pac 10... I wouldnt leave if I were in his shoes. He's probaly only another 10 years away from having a statue in front of Jones stadium...
Agreed, at the end of the day I see Gerald Myers and Tech boosters ponying up some huge dollars to keep Mike Leach. Losing him would set the program back 10 years. As far as Leach's personal interests, I know he probably misses the West Coast having gone to law school at Pepperdine. I just don't think U-Dubb athletics have a very big following on campus or in Seattle.
I agree that Tech's got to do everything to keep the guy. But UW Football is a huge deal here - people have an inflated view of how good the program is/ought to be, but it's a big deal, second only to the Seahawks statewide. Other UW athletics, not so much. I agree that it's probably a ploy, but if Washington can get him, I'd be thrilled. That being said, if UW can't land Leach, I see them chasing a guy like Kyle Whittingham from Utah. Those good mid-major coaches just can't stick around very long if they have success.
historically speaking, UW is a pretty significant program, no? as of right now leach going to UW is a probably a lateral move, but you can definitely see why he'd do it... regardless, if tech wants to keep him they'll definitely have to pay him. i personally dont see him leaving lubbock, though.
Looks like the U-Dubb thing was all a bluff: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-texastech-leach&prov=ap&type=lgns Texas Tech AD says school negotiating with Leach LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)—Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers says the school is negotiating a contract extension with Mike Leach, amid reports that the Red Raiders coach has met with the University of Washington about the Huskies’ top job. Myers wouldn’t confirm or deny newspaper reports that Leach was in Seattle this week to talk to UW officials. Myers said Leach didn’t seek permission for an interview and that he hadn’t been contacted by Washington. Leach didn’t return a call seeking comment Wednesday. Leach has two years remaining on a five-year contract and is making $1.75 million this season. The Seattle Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported the Leach-UW meeting, citing unidentified sources.
You would be incorrect about that. I have a good friend currently attending UW. They're nuts about the football program.
Well another one bites the dust. Tuberville fired at Auburn Word is they are going after Leach too but who knows.
If I were an established head coach, I would not touch the Auburn job right now. Saban is dominating the in-state recruiting right now and doesn't show any signs of letting up. Auburn fans won't be satisfied with being second best in the state on a regular basis. I think Tubby dug his own grave by attempting to abandon his old coaching philosophy and go to the spread.
That offense has a shelf life. Like other offenses its time will come at it will no longer be so deadly. If he moves that offense to the SEC the shelf life will decrease. Defenses will expose it much sooner.
the spread offense is spreading, that's what they run a florida so it works in big conferences. that's not an issue. also, spurrier got away with a lot at florida and might still be there. I'm sure Leach can control himself enough to keep a job if he's winning at any program. that's what everyone likes most. that being said, you keep hearing he's leaving but I don't see it. he seems happy to have found a niche.
On this point, you are mistaken. I took a trip to Seattle during football season a few years ago. The only time I saw traffic in the week I was there was anywhere near the UW campus around game time. Lake Union was filled with people piloting their boats to campus to see the game. The locals told us that it was like that for every game. It is a real event there.
