Which is one of the biggest reasons why the bowl systems sucks ass so much. So you can be a team that goes 6-6 and has a rabid fanbase who is disappointed in your season but travels well (because of their rabid fanbase) and goes to a nice bowl game over a team that is 9-3, a clearly superior team but doesn't have quite the reputation of having fans travel to the games? College football needs a playoff so badly....
I don't even know what to make of it. Either they were trying to punk their QB and that one guy was trying to send a message, or he simply fell asleep. But how in the world does one fall asleep on the line of scrimmage?
i'm pretty sure there's a rule where you can't select a 6-6 team to a bowl game when there are still 7-5 or better teams remaining from the same conference...
Well supposedly it is up to the ACC on whether or not they are going to allow this. There might be more where they actually let the teams decide on this but if that is the case, it is hard to see the 3 or 4 teams that are better than FSU going along with this. I mean if they had actually beaten Miami and any of the other teams ahead of them, I might see their case but come on, I wouldn't even argue a 6-6 Miami team to be in a better bowl than a 9-3 FSU team especially if Miami had lost to FSU. Yes Bowden probably deserved better than what he got but like Major said, he has been putting FSU in an uncomfortable spot for the last couple of years. I think they had to pay Jimbo Fisher 5 million if he didn't become coach this next season. Also, have a better team if you want to play in a decent bowl game.
I don't know what a playoff would do to change this "problem". In pretty much any playoff system that's been proposed, Miami wouldn't be in it...and in the end, what's the real difference between the Gator Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl besides name? They're both in Florida, and I sure as hell would rather spend a weekend in Orlando than Jacksonville.
That's true and even if it was a 16 team playoff, it is doubtful Miami could get in (I think they are like 17 or 18). My ranting about a playoff was more or less a way of trying to fix the bowl system. I had always figured that the higher-tiered bowls could be used for the various playoff games and let the minor bowls be used for those teams that didn't get in the playoff. But it really boils down to a couple of things: 1) The prestige of playing in a New Year's Day Bowl Game compared to one that isn't. Granted, the Champs Sports Bowl isn't a Las Vegas Bowl but it isn't as known as the Gator Bowl. Also, it would look better to recruits when they are selling the program to them that Miami was a New Year Day Bowl Game champion compared to being the Champs Sports Bowl champion. 2) The arrogance of FSU being able to leapfrog teams that are better than them by record and in some cases had beaten them head to head. Honestly, if Miami goes to the Champs Sports Bowl and FSU goes to a lesser bowl then it is not a big deal. I'll be disappointed, for sure, that the Canes didn't get a better bowl to go to but it is something I would get over pretty quickly. However, if FSU was in the Gator Bowl and Miami had to play in the Champs Sports Bowl, then that's a different story. But I am thinking this will be a non-issue, especially if this situation is left up to the other ACC teams.
I actually talked to an FSU fan about this. As someone earlier posted, the guy did what he's apparently told to do. If they think it's offsides, the o-line is supposed to not move in order to bring attention to it. From what I'm told, they do this a lot, and even did it a few other times in that game (and got flags). Now, in this case, that one guy probably took the "don't move" instructions too literally - he certainly could have moved after a second or two to help the team. The bigger problem here is that this is a dumb coaching strategy (and maybe a reason Bowden needs to go). The refs aren't going to call offsides because the o-line doesn't move, and all it does is give you less of an opportunity to take advantage of your free play.
