come on, donny. you'd kill for UH to be one of the Oceanic 5.

Baylor sees it's media dollars go from $7 million to $17 million, roughly. No one at BU is complaining about remaining in a BCS conference.

Of course I'd kill to get a slice of the pie, but giving them the exit money that YOU are entitled to? REALLY? After they threatened to throw you overboard? My god, talk about being completely gutless and subservient.

I can see giving OU/UT/A&M their proportionate share of the TV revenue, etc since they EARNED it... but this? How did they earn this money? How do they deserve it more than the other schools? It's ridiculous. And you know as well as I do it's not a healthy sign for the league.

I don't think it speaks to the health of the league at all. If the other schools don't care, why would it? We all know we needed UT to stay to stick around in this conference. That, in part, held it together.

UH would be equally gutless and subservient, Donny. That's the nature of it. A&M, UT and OU had options and were the drivers...they're going to end up with a disproportionate amount of everything. Same old, same old.

Why even have conference by-laws then? Just write "UT takes whatever it wants, gives OU/A&M whatever it feels like, and then they give us whatever they don't want." What a sham.

You can say UH would be gutless, and maybe so, but that doesn't make it right. You'd think the 5 of them would be able to band together and stop this kind of nonsense. I stand by my statement, the concentration of power in this league just got even more one sided, and it will eventually destroy it.

If not for A&M's SEC threat, the league was dead.

If I'm a Baylor, KU, KSU, Mizzou, Iowa State, and even Tech/OSU person, I am going to start looking at CYOA scenarios ASAP.

Can't possibly get caught with your pants down again.

Of course I am - that's the nature of change. Everyone was scared of a conference network too... meanwhile, the B10 had the vision to put it together despite tons of criticism and changed the landscape of college sports. That's the whole purpose of vision.

Sure - that's absolutely true. That was necessary for the PacNetwork, probably. But that's not really relevant to whether UT should have stayed or gone. The Pac16 was a win-win deal for UT, OU, and the Pac10.

as far as academics is concerned, forbes ranks UT higher than any Big 10 public university. Cal and UCLA are ahead of them, and University of Washington is before Texas A&M. I think you have to consider in the case of the Cal schools, I think they spend a lot more tax dollars on their public system. But I could be wrong.

i'm just looking forward to BU playing UT in hoops again this upcoming season :p

by the way...this Big 12 (sans CU and NU) is a KILLER basketball conference.

Stewart Mandell's tweets from the press conference (SI.com)

That call gave me no reason to believe there's anything stopping that league from crumbling again a year from now. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

Nebraska, Colorado were very wise to get out when they could. They'll find it refreshing to have a voice. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

I'm guessing there's a fundamental difference in how the Big 10, Pac 10, etc are run compared to the Big 12. Even if it hurts them in the short term, it seems like Colorado and Nebraska were after a league that was more fair and balanced in terms of power and representation. I can't help but think soon the rest of the Big 12, sans UT, will be thinking the same.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to watch, but based on what I've been reading today the UT presser didn't go over well. Apparently everyone seemed pretty worn and tired and not confident at all. No real answers were given and there was not much excitement in the air.

I know I can only speculate, but everyone who watched seemed to have the opinion that this was not what we (the UT administration) wanted. Obviously, we seem to benefit from the money, but one can only hope that they will revisit this soon and make a better move.

    /hopeful alumni thinking

What a crappy situation for most involved.

It was a great business move by all of the other schools. Sure we lost out on 2M dollars but we gained 7-10M per year when the new deal kicks in.

It seems pretty simple to me. We went from getting a pay cut to receiving a raise.

Would UT/A&M/OU leave if they didn't get the exit money?

Seems to me like you just took the Big 12 by-laws and flushed them down the crapper for no good reason.

If I'm anybody but UT, I'm living the rest of my Big 12 life on borrowed time.
