Ya, Aggie fans are dumb. I can't believe they are letting this happen. Big 10 or Pac-16, those mean something outside of football. SEC just puts a bad taste in my mouth outside of the football world.

It seems to me that the FSN market is one pie. You can divide that pie 16 ways or 24 ways.

Unfortunately, Baylor KSU, Kansas and ISU don't make the pie any bigger. Neither does Utah.

A&M does with it's Houston, Dallas and San Antonio Aggies.

And it associates the school with the educational excellence instead of the redneck culture.

I guess in a Big 12 deal Texas would get their 1/24th of the pie plus their own home made pop tart.

why does the athletic conference matter, I'm sure a vanderbilt degree gets you pretty far.

Resources, grant money, research, prestige. Athletic conference is not an appropriate term, its more than athletics.

Oh absolutely - no one else has a place to go (outside of A&M) without Texas. But Texas has always wanted out - and I think they'll take it this time even if the B12 presents some nutty idea that makes financial sense. They would be stupid to hang around and see if implodes again in 5-10 years.

serious question because I don't know, does the conference you're in affect the the grants and research money you get?

The Aggies Rivals site is saying they have officially turned down the Pac-10.

    Two things I'm hearing -

TAMU will go to the SEC; the board of regents vote will be 6-3 (interesting that it will be a split)

Kansas will replace TAMU in the Pac16 expansion.

Yes, sometimes indirectly - the Big10 gets you in the CIC. There is talk of a similar consortium building between some of Cali and Texas schools if the Pac16 comes together.

Beyond that, the associations over time affect your reputation, which then affects your access.

Yup. Even though the reports on TAMU rejecting the Pac 10 are split, the evidence that can't be disputed is that the Pac 10 plane is headed to Kansas City tonight. Hard to believe they'd do that for a conditional invite.

U know, I'm not disputing any claim that this is bigger than football, but i have a hard time believing tthis isnt about football. I dont see the pac 10 beating down the doors of rice. Its all about the big revenue producing sports that take care of all the other non revenue producing sports. Kids who play in front of 100,000 are not looking at research grants and prestige in academia. Kids are looking at which school best prepares me for the next level and thats it. People need to stop being hypocritical and pretending its about school when its not. Its about saturdays and basketball. Each tourney game nets the university 500k per game or at least thats what it was when i played in the early 90's. That money is used a variety of ways and pays for alot of things. The tv money funds more than atheletics. At least tamu isnt fooling themselves and neither is anyone else in the sec. Its all about big time sports in college. ABC,espn, cbs, and all the networks dont care about research. They cant sell research to advertisers, they sell the heisman hopefulls.

If that were the case, Texas would simply go to the SEC.

Kids aren't making these decisions - university Presidents are. I have no idea what relevance that has to anything.

Of course the TV networks don't care. They, also, aren't making these decisions.
