The only sport Baylor didn't reach success in within the Big XII was football.

At the time Baylor was included in the Big XII, it was just about 2 years removed from being ranked as high as #4 in the country in football. They had better facilities than the other potential schools and more willingness to invest in new facilities...which they did.

Kirk Bohls reports that Baylor and Tech are not in the ongoing meeting with UT and A&M officials. I trust his word a lot more than Chip Brown's...

he's the DMN guy, right?? i saw an update saying they weren't there...then saw another that said they're meeting later at Perry's request, but A&M and Texas are meeting alone, first. i have no idea what to believe.

that makes more sense. thanks for the clarification MadMax. If that's the case, then, yes, I agree the remaining 10 teams would still be better than the Pac 10. Colorado and Nebraska hasn't brought much to the conference in years and if the conference can somehow get TCU to join (I don't see why they would since they are dominating their respective conference), it would make the Big 12 even stronger. In a crazy world, it would be kinda cool to get a strong football program like TCU and a storied football program like ND to replace CU and NU. But that's just me

Still, those Pac-10 TV dollars that I've been reading about is surely hard for the Big 12 schools to pass up.

Nah, he's the Statesman guy. Perhaps there's a meeting with just UT and A&M and a separate one with the group - that would make the most sense.

Well, if Colorado is officially in, I don't see how Baylor makes its way into the Pac10. Next option is probably the SEC, if they can convince A&M to go that way?

Bohls is from the Austin American Statesman. It's really hard to decipher which information to believe, but I'd take Bohls' info over Chip Brown's any day.

For those wondering why Baylor, Tech, Texas, and A&M seem to be joined at the hip, Perry's request says it all. The alumni from these schools have too much influence on the State and if they want something, they're more than likely to get it (or at least get serious consideration).

Why doesn't Texas just take the lead and build an uber conference of their own?

After nearly seven years in Baylor University's chemistry department, Billy Mark Britt was denied tenure last spring. A letter from the provost said the assistant professor was "generally considered effective in teaching and scholarship," but there were "serious questions" about his "commitment to the Christian mission of the university."

"That's Baylor-speak for church attendance," says Mr. Britt, who will be out of a job in May. "I'm convinced that if I'd gone to church more, I would've been retained."

Donald D. Schmeltekopf, the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Baylor, a Southern Baptist-affiliated institution, has refused to comment on Mr. Britt's case. But Mr. Schmeltekopf says that religious participation is a key factor in the university's tenure-and-promotion decisions. "It's critical that we have evidence that the faculty member genuinely supports the mission of the university if they're going to be promoted and gain tenure," he says, "and one way they would demonstrate that is simply by going to a church and participating in the life of that church."
