I don't doubt that what Rip Van Rocket said played a part, but the arrival of Mack Brown was also a huge reason for Texas's jump in recruiting.

Many rivals find ways to make fun of him, some of the reasons justified, but it is pretty much impossible to deny that he is one hell of a salesman. When he got to Austin, he set out to rebuild the bridges that were burned between the previous UT coaches like Mackovic and high school coaches across the state. Before Mack got here, many of the state's top recruits would leave the state to go to national powerhouse schools like Notre Dame or Miami. Mack set out to keep the big recruits within state borders, and he has used his personable demeanor and success on the field to make this happen. Granted, good talent gets away every year (See: Peterson, Adrian) but it is far less than it used to be.

While the forming of the Big XII probably helped some in Texas's resurgence in the late 90's, I think Mack's mission to keep Texas kids in Texas is the main reason UT was able to get the big names like VY and Benson, which seemed impossible only around a decade earlier.

Blegh, my mind had erased that depressing memory until I saw that video again. A tremendous comeback by Texas within the last 2 min (#1 in the nation then), only to be ruined by Blake Gideon's dropped interception and then a TD by Crabtree within the last seconds...

God I hated the Raiders so much in '08

Frequently beat Texas? Do you know what that word means? UH is 7-16 against Texas and they lost in 5 out of the last 6 years of the SWC to Texas.

    Texas isn't afraid of UH.

A&M could become extemely conflicted if the SEC offers Baylor and A&M a couple of seats. There would be a fair amount of pressure on A&M from the legislature to do this, just to keep BU from floundering. And if it's something that A&M might be interested in otherwise......

I have some information suggesting that is out there....

I have some information I'm not so sure about suggesting that UT was less than truthful with the Texas legislature even after the Pac 10 made some positive comments to BU...and that A&M has some sense of conflict over that.

Texas, A&M and Baylor are joined at the hip because their alumni sit together in the Texas legislature and bear responsibility for the economic impact of major football on the State. And never discount the political clout of the Baptist religion in Texas, there are thousands of Baptist preachers out there talking to their flocks every week and they talk about religion, politics and football. Also, the #1 law school and #1 Med school are both named Baylor. That is a huge source of money and power. (edit) If that means A&M and Baylor to the SEC and Texas to the PAC in order to get all three in a Super conference then that's what they should do.

It is in the best interest of the State's scholastic institutions to band together to produce the best possible economic outcome from this deal.

And you U of H guys can just leave the thread. This intrigue is way out of your league. You got no stadium, no TV numbers, no politics, no benefactors of note, no star athletes.

Max, there is a direct correlation in Texas's rise to power with Joe Jamail winning the Pennzoil lawsuit against Texaco. It was his money that jump-started Texas from just another school to national powerhouse. Like a snowball rolling down hill, money begat winning, winning begat associated inflated egos, that begat more donations. Now every jocksniffing lawyer, oilman and politician in Texas wants to identify himself with the Horns.

The reason why you can't think of one is because there aren't any.

The last major blue chip recruit Baylor got who could have picked other options? Odell James, 1996. Largely because they would allow him to play basketball as well as football.

    Found this on another website.

    Not sure if it's credible.

Not really going to argue any of your other points, but that bolded part is pure bullsh!t. UT is #1 law school; hell, Baylor isn't even #3 (behind SMU and UH). Also, the medical school Baylor is NOT affiliated with the Baylor in Waco anymore, so I don't see how the Baylor name is really all that powerful...

Baylor College of Medicine has nothing to do w/ BU anymore. that relationship ended a looooong time ago.

if it were up to BCM, it would now be named DeBakey College of Medicine

as far as BU football. i think it would be awesome for them to land in the SEC. but i dont think they should ask for a&m's "help" to get a bid.

Missouri and BU to the SEC would help the SEC expand their footprint. i think it would be a win/win for all parties involved.

the way i'm hearing it....the SEC would be making the offer to BU to put pressure on A&M (knowing the pressures in the state legislature for BU not to get left out alone) to head to the SEC with them and keep UT on their annual non-conference schedule.

we'll see. i'll say this....ESPN is funny. they report things like they've happened. my esteem for them has diminished because there have been times during this i think i've known more than they have....and they've reported stuff as fact.
