Horrible idea. It sounds nice in theory, but you'd end up with 5-loss teams getting into the playoff ahead of more deserving teams. Teams shouldn't be rewarded by playing easy schedules. Last year Georgia was deserving of being in the playoffs if there was one. This year, there could be 3 top-10 ranked Big12 teams in the top-8. I'd rather see all 3 of them go to the playoffs instead of Troy and a 3+ loss ACC champion.

The other major problem with just slotting the conference champions is that it leaves no incentive to play tough during non-conference games. Teams could pull their starters quickly in late season non-conference games if they already have their division locked up.

Put the most deserving teams in the playoff. Not an 80+ ranked Sun Belt champion.

I hate how "we need a playoff system!" is all people talk about all season long. There has NEVER been a playoff system in the history of college football. The BCS is at least better than whatever system that existed before, yet it seems that only since its inception that this talk has really heated up. Why can't people just shut up and enjoy the games like they used to? I can think of few things more fruitless than b****ing about a playoff for college football. By doing this you are actually ensuring that the system never changes because you are giving the game MORE attention. The advantage that the BCS has over the NFL system (which is what people would rather see) is that it has people talking every week about not only the games, but the fact that there's no playoff. This gives college football more airtime than it would otherwise receive.

On a side note, the ones who were b****ing about involvement of Congress into the steroid stuff can chime in anytime now about Obama's interest in how college football does its business.

I was wondering if I was the only one that noticed this. I never remember hearing about a playoff on the scale that I do now before the BCS.

Use the BCS rankings to create a playoff system. The 8 teams that qualify for a BCS bowl game all play each other 1 vs 8 , 2 vs 7 , 3 vs 6 , 4 vs 5 Just call these games whatever you want to call it... Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Sugar. Come up with a name for 3 more bowl games ( for the 2nd round ) Call the final game of this playoff system the actual National Championship Game.

This would get rid of all if not most of the controversies in the BCS since it's including all the top 8 teams who would be playing in the BCS game and the playoff format from within gives each team a fair opportunity to play in a Title game. For example if a weaker/smaller school like Boise State or Utah finishes the season undefeated and they're ranked 4th or 5th in the BCS it's sure to stir controversy under the normal BCS setting (at least to a Boise state or Utah fan). In the format I mentioned they still get a fair shot at the title. Also coming up with more bowl games for the playoff system means more games. More games = more money. Everybody wins. Of course there will be teams complaining of not being a part of the 8 team playoff system but I think it would be fair considering teams ranked 9 and less have no business being a part of BCS talk anyway.

Here's a random question that has been rolling through my head over the past couple of days:

Do you think the major bowl games might want to ditch the BCS? It seems like some of the major bowl games have gotten hosed with some of the recent teams they've been forced to select.

Think about the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago, they got stuck with Utah vs. Pitt. This year, you're looking at a potential Cincinnati v. Maryland Orange Bowl. Also, last year the Sugar Bowl got stuck with Georgia v. Hawaii while this year they could get Alabama v. Utah or Boise State. Seems like they might get tired of having to select teams they don't really want to.

You left one out: the Rose bowl may be stuck with Oregon State. This may eventually happen, but it hasn't been going on long enough for the BCS bowls to feel the hit to their pocketbooks.
