Best two teams in College football are UF and Texas..... OU doesn't play defense worth a flip. Will Texas sneak into the NC game against OU? Florida may not have enough juice to pass em.... DD
Agreed. I hope they blast OU because Stoops is a jerk. rockbox, you still wondering why I don't give a flip about wanting the Big 12 to "represent" when OU plays UF?
I have been hanging on that sliver of hope. but tell me, is it at all realistic. I am SO tired of hearing that Florida is already in from the media. Why can't they wait for the BCS standings before setting up the matchups, etc.?
I was thinking about this earlier... you know the human aspect of the poll will be 1. OU 2. Florida 3. Texas. As of now, in the computers TX is #2, and Florida is #6... It's a possibility that TX could be #2 but in the end I don't think they would allow Florida to not be in the CG but damn it would be a huge *****fest if they were left out. Personally I would love to see it haha To me the best 4 teams in the nation are OU, UF, TX, USC ... who wouldnt love a 4 team playoff between those teams? I dont see how this could be a bad thing. The sponsors could still make a killing off this damn we need a playoff
Actually the Cincinnati - Hawaii game has an impact on that apparently because Florida beat Hawaii and OU beat Cinci. So if Hawaii wins, 1) Florida gets a boost 2) OU's SOS falls which causes Texas's SOS to fall. If Cinci wins, the opposite things happen. We will all see tomorrow... Who knows maybe somehow the computers will give Alabama a break and make them No. 2 or something instead of dropping them down...
I'm hoping this happens for two reason. Texas gets put a smack down on OU again. Secondly, this could be the final controversy that brings a playoff.
Another controversy could be Utah. Let's say they crush Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. They now would be the only undefeated team in the country and have wins over a top-10 Alabama, top-10 TCU, top-15 BYU, and Pac-10 runnerup Oregon State. The computers already have them in the top 5 and would likely have them in the top 2 or 3 with that win. Yet, they would be deemed unworthy of even having an opportunity at a national title. And yet a 1-loss team with wins over that same Alabama team, a top-5 OU, and a top-20 Georgia, with a loss to unranked Ole Miss, could be the consensus national champion. (if OU were to win, they would have a better argument with wins over top-5 FL, top-10 Tech, top-15 OSU, top-20 Missou, top-10 TCU, top-20 Cinci, and a loss to top-3 TX)
^^^ Utah will not crush Alabama. The only three teams that have the firepower to crush Alabama are in the Big 12.
Perception is different from reality. Among the top 25 teams in total defense, OU has faced just two this season: #2 TCU (215 yards/game) and #24 Cincinnati (315.7 yards/game). TCU piled up its gaudy defensive numbers against a schedule full of MWC scrub teams. Big XII defenses are soft as butter, and teams like UT only look good because they stand out from the sad mediocrity of the rest of the conference. The Big XII's calling card this year has been offense, NOT defense. In fact, there is not a single Big XII team in the top 25 defenses this year. Not one. Oklahoma's defense ranks 66th in the nation, and Texas isn't much better at 50th. Look at the game box scores and you can immediately see that it is true -- in every one of its "marquee" matchups, Oklahoma has won by basically having many more bullets to fire in a shootout. In contrast, Florida has faced #3 Alabama, #4 Tennessee, #11 South Carolina, #13 Florida State, #16 Ole Miss, and #25 Miami. With the exception of the close loss to Ole Miss and the 11 point win against Alabama yesterday, the rest of these wins were blowouts. And despite the fact that notable SEC defenses have taken a step backwards this season, Florida's SEC blowout victims are still sporting much better defenses than OU's -- Georgia #27, Vanderbilt #29, LSU #37, Kentucky #38. Florida's defense ranks 7th in the nation, and it could be argued that they should actually be higher since their 1st string defense usually plays for only three quarters, and before Alabama, had given up one touchdown in about six straight games. Again: OU hasn't faced anything like they will face when they meet Florida in January. I don't see how their defense can even contain Florida, let alone stop them.
Jeop, Don't you think that the Big 12's defensive ratings are a little skewed because of all the high powered B12 offenses? DD
That's a chicken or egg thing. I would argue that the offensive numbers are skewed because of the sheer absence of defensive prowess in the conference. There is not one team that really has a noteworthy defense. It was clearly obvious in games like today's, where Bradford pretty much stood like a statue the entire game waiting for receivers to break open because Mizzou couldn't generate anything moderately resembling a pass rush. A truly great team ought to be able to shut down its opponents while piling up points on them, and I haven't seen any Big XII team do that. Certainly not OU.
Have you considered that those defenses are that highly rated because the SEC offenses are so terrible? Florida hasn't faced a remotely good offense this season. Nothing anywhere close to the caliber of what OU will bring. This is all two sides of the same coin. The SEC has good defenses; the B12 has good offenses. Florida hasn't faced an offense like OU; OU hasn't faced a defense like Florida. OU is the highest scoring team in the history of college football, and they still have a game to play this season.
OU completely shut down both Tech and Missouri's high-powered offenses in two of the last three weeks.
You could also argue the opposite, inflated offense due to poor defenses. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Anyways, I'm surprised you finally realized Florida is actually a good team. I guess you watched them play for once tonight?
I think Florida is good, but they would have more than one loss if they played in the Big 12. All I have ever said was the SEC was VASTLY overated this year..... DD
I still think they are a bit overated....I misspoke..I think it should be OU vs Texas......but sort of conceded Florida is in because of the press love of the SEC. There are 4 teams above the others in College football...here is how I rank the top 4 teams. 1. Texas - best team in the land... 2. OU - Best offense 3. UF - Best of the rest 4. USC - here every year.
The Big XII has certainly had more high powered offenses than the SEC this year, that's for sure, and despite the mediocrity of their defenses, I'd still say as a whole the conference has been better offensively this year than the SEC has. Much of this is a function of quarterback play -- Tebow is really the only truly outstanding QB in the SEC this year (although JP Wilson has had a fairly good year), while the Big XII has Bradford, McCoy, Harrell and Daniel. But that said, I'd be willing to put Florida's offense up there right next to any of those Big XII offenses. I don't see how any of those teams could expect to win a shootout with Florida, especially with Harvin on the field. And none of those teams has a comparable defense.
Yeah, I was thinking to myself, "*that* might be an exaggeration" when I wrote it. They did do a number on TTU in the first half of that game.
