Shanna: Because at most schools the players DO receive an education and actually use that education later in life. Track alumni at most decent academic schools that also field competitive sports programs. Many of the former players are businessmen, teachers, and lawyers (I mentioned this previously). Texas and Nebraska are not the norms of college football.

Money is always going to matriculate to the schools that conduct the best policies. It's the capitalism of education.

I'm glad *somebody* knows a good argument when they see it! [IMG]

I'm not arguing so much that athletes get paid as I am that colleges should not. The money they do make is used to help support the school, which I suppose is good; but, the school's resulting attachment to that money and they athletic dept that produces it makes them do some rather unscrupulous things (for examples, you can look at Bobby Knight for one, or the NCAA rules that protect their athletes from competing entities like the NBA). I'd prefer it if the schools could get the monkey off their backs, continue to run athletics programs, continue to give athletic scholarships, and make very little money out of the whole enterprise.

You did mention that the schools might have a hard time funding what they want to do with the athletic dept's money. That may well be true and don't know what to say about that. There are other schools, like the University of Chicago, that have such pathetic athletic programs that they probably cost more than they make, and yet still have no trouble paying for stuff.

[As an aside, you also mentioned a 'disconnect' that I had mentioned. You seem to have inferred it was between athletes and other students. I did not mean to imply that. I was talking about the departmental rift between Athletics and other disciplines. Certainly, a student is a student, and they differ only in quality, not type; however, Athletics differs from other departments within the school because their goals are more pointed toward making money than educating students.]

Oh, I've seen THAT disconnect before as well. A few years back our athletic department promised some recruits scholarships that didn't meet minimum university requirements. The school rejected them, and our coach and a couple of players left because of it. Real fiasco.

The University of Chicago is the exception, rather than the rule. That has a lot to do, also, with their excellent alumni donations. *shrug*... I do know that football pays for quite a few scholarships at BC, and I'm getting one of them... so? See what I mean?

I'm not saying there isn't anything wrong with college sports and the commercialism surrounding it. I am saying that I'm not sure the answer is simply to take away the money. I'm afraid that would just hurt other parts of the college.

They are getting paid, they get an education for free.

    Also,

I think all the players are paid fairly. Those that arent that good get free education, free food, free room, etc, etc.

Those that are good make enormous amounts of money after they graduate thanks to the platform they stood on at their schools(plus the education, food, rooming).

Now this isnt true for sprots like lacrosse, but this isnt a revenue generatign sport so why should they get paid any extra anyways.

AS far as the schools making money, I know a lot of it is split between schools in the conference. Plus, most goes toward building new buildings, research, and scholarships for other. Its not like these schools are taking the money and conquering the world. They are actually doing good stuff with it.
