Yeah...pretty crazy how you can go from Longhorn for Life to applying to A&M over Texas. Assuming you're in the top 10% of a Texas high school graduating class(The only way you would know if you were in to A&M this early, I believe), you would have similar chances at a scholarship at both schools... Congrats to all who have been accepted...pretty impressive list of schools.
Yeah I probably should have thought more about the city of Nashville and if I'd like it but I fell in love with the campus etc.. Isabel... I believe you went to Rice.. which is still quite a bit more competitive,.. vandy has apparently increased quite a bit in the last few years.. the new chancellor has helped things.. It is top 20, but I think the thing that hinders it from moving up is there is certainly a stigma with moving to tennessee.. and it is hard to attract top students at times because it is in tennessee.. I certainly would choose to move to Houston for Rice before moving to Nashville... and there are quite a few times I wish I was at Rice... wanting a top 20 school in the South automatically limits you to Emory in Atlanta, Rice, Duke in a really small place compared to Houston, or Vanderbilt.. We need more of the top ones in the South! but being from Texas I think I needed to get away for a while or I'd be home every weekend and get nothing done! Not that I get anything done now..
mrpaige.. sorry about the double post... but it is funny you mention about moving to lubbock the biggest thing you could psyche yourself up for at the time.. I was so the person that in no way would have thought i'd psyche myself up to move anywhere. .. kind of figured I'd stay in Houston.. actually most people figured even moving as far as Austin would be a big deal for me. That's probably why my parents didn't mind me applying to far away schools because they didn't think I'd ever actually get the guts to move that far away. They and I didn't think I would until the day I sent the form back saying I was.

Is being in Tennessee really that much of a stigma? Of course, people think things about Tennessee without actually visiting there. I grew up in TN so I knew that it was actually a clean, civilized place. However, I had the same reasons as you for going to a school out of state... I wanted to get further away than that. I just liked the social atmosphere at Rice better than at Vanderbilt, somehow. People at Rice seemed to have a better time, and seemed not to need to drink as much to do it. It was like no one was afraid to be an individual. Some people at Vanderbilt mentioned wishing they had gone to Rice, and I didn't want to be one of those people.... since Rice seemed suited for me at the time. Of course, I was young and naive... besides, Rice has been getting more competitive. I'm only 43% snob , and that may not be enough for Rice these days.
Good luck to everyone! Cherish the anticipation! Cuz you're going to be talking about it for a good four years. For those of you who're down, my sister received 15 rejection letters when she was applying to college. And one acceptance to the University of Chicago which came at the very end...
isabel.. It isn't that much of a thing now that I am here, but when I was applying I got people saying why would you want to go to Tennessee.. they are all rednecks! .. which is what a lot of people think of Texas as well.. A lot of the people who are considering applying haven't actually been here so they can only rely on the thoughts they have about tennessee from what they have heard. I know quite a few from the west coast and northeast who have mentioned the location was their biggest worry.. when you think of prestigous universities I guess Tennessee doesn't exactly come to mind.. nor does Texas for people in the north. I know our chancellor who left Brown to come here mentioned before that part of the reason the rankings for us (other schools in south) etc not being higher than it is .. is because of the thought that a top whatever school needs to be in the northeast. if rice was in the northeast it might be ranked even higher.. All in all I felt more comfortable on the vandy campus, but I think that was because it was far away which is what I needed.. it seems that it came down to Rice, Duke, or Vandy for a lot of the people who are here. If I end up at grad school I would like to go back to Texas which would put Rice at the top of the list. You went to a harder school to get in to than me though so you should get yourself to 95% snob.. 43% just doesn't cut it! You are right about the drinking thing.... I personally don't drink but there are plenty here who drink a lot.. then again I've heard all kinds of stories about the excessive drinking at Rice too.
The girlfriend of 6 years just got into some of the schools she wanted to go after her and I finnished the undergrad at A&M she got in the Phd programs for Child Psychology at Penn, U. Texas, A&M, NYU, UNC, Rice and a few other places i dont remember. I am so proud of her cause i know i could never be as smart as her. She is still gonna hear from other schools that havent sent anything back yet.
Hey RocketFan, Do you go to Vandy right now, or have you already graduated, I was just wonderin cuz i may come up and visit during the week of MArch 15th.
Funny about all the Tulane mentions I applied to their law school. Good to know there will be plenty of Rocket Fans there if I attend. Nikestrad congrats on acceptance to Washington in St. Louis I didn't know anyone else had even heard of that school but it's a good one. Won't hear back on my apps until probably end of March or April because I won't get back my LSAT grade until March 1st. Did anyone hear back from any law schools? Again congrats to everyone!
Congrats. I'd be interested in hearing about the process as I will likely apply there within the next two years...check your email.
Get a dish and and a sat. box from home and you will get all the games if you have local channels. Thats what i do, thank god for direct tv GIG'EM, Dan
I really enjoyed my time at baylor. As for the games I think Damon's shows most of them but is too epensive to go there regularly. I also think George's (a great local hangout with cheap food) has the games on too but im not real sure.
Thos of you who got into Tulane this year, are you all going to be going to the Accepted Students Reception thing in Houston, I can't b/c i will be in NEw York but I was just wonderin.
