not that i disagree with you, but have you EVER won this argument? or at least changed someones mind?
I like Collective Soul. They have very catchy guitar hooks and nice vocal harmonies. They don't sound 'grunge' to me at all. The singer actually sings and their hooks stay with you. Now, I know for many on this bbs, it's practically a SIN to actually LIKE a band that has songs on the radio, but I don't care. I still like them.
I liked Collective Soul, I even have their first 4 albums, but I just stopped listening to them. I think I just didn't like the direction they took on that 4th album. It was not as bad as Bush's last album where they really went for a more electronic sound, but enough to keep me from following them further. I did like the last song they had that played on the radio a year or two ago, but not enough to buy the album. For me, the 2nd album was the best, every song on it is good. I also liked Precious Decleration and Listen. Also, if somebody who likes Creed tells you a band sucks, it's a good idea to not listen to their opinion.
But Scott Staph rocks!...the way he hovered above the fans in that one video like he was their messiah...sheer genius... Creed, Nickelback blows a big one for me, after Ten I didn't think much of that band those 2 got signed up for sounding like them
I dont think they sound the same either. Was commenting on people's reactions to anything grunge or alternative back then, when it was new to people. First thing out of their mouths was is "that Pearl Jam?" "Is that Nirvana?" cuz it'd be the only name they'd know. Aggravated me at times, too.
Wasn't the first single Sex Type Thing? <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-s3lmr09oVg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-s3lmr09oVg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Put me in the they never sounded like Pearl Jam camp.
I thought it was Plush. Anyway, that's the first song I ever heard by them and I thought it was Pearl Jam when I heard it for the first time.
Their first hit was Sex Type Thing. And as a guy who covered both of these bands in college, I can tell you it isn't very different to sound like both Weiland and Vedder. The bands might have a different sound, but Weiland and Vedder sound very similar.
That's certainly authoritative. There are 3 essential singing styles/sounds that any english speaking white man on the planet can produce with very little practice: Elvis Presley Michael McDonald Eddie Vedder
