Considering his embarrassing performance of SOS, how about no. Powell has zero integrity - the guy knew the Iraq war stuff was wrong, and lobbied against it - then he went out and sold the lies anyway. He's one of the guiltiest of the bunch because unlike the others, who SHOULD have known better, he actually DID know better but did it anyway. If I were Obama I'd run from this - Powell is a joke.
i dont think hes a joke. hes a soldiers soldier. if hes given orders he carries them out w/o question. this is good except when it comes to questions of morality. i feel sorry for him. cause he got used and abused. he is not a politician and i dont think his personality is suited to be one.
He wasn't a soldier when he testified in front of the UN about WMDs. He knew the evidence was shaky. He knew the neo-cons had a blood lust for Saddam. He should have refused.
So when Powell was supposed to be supporting Obama, it was out of some destructive "racial pride", but if he isn't it's because of deep concerns? I'm really under the impression you think black people in government ought to model themselves after this guy:
While I agree with you, glynch, about Powell and his responsibility for things done in the past, the general public knows damn near nothing about that. Politically, it would be a coup for Obama. So while Powell may not "deserve" to have a voice at the convention (and I don't really care if he does or not), the endorsement, if it comes, would give Obama a boost and just might help him win. That trumps Powell's past for me. However, there may be nothing to it. I do think he might endorse Obama (he's really ticked off at Bush and company, from what I've read), but I doubt that he would speak at the convention. Impeach Bush/Cheney.
I agree with all of this. Powell has a lot of credibility with independents and Republicans and could have a real impact. It's especially useful to Obama because he's one of the people clearly respected on military leadership and provides comfort for people concerned about Obama's CinC credentials. That said, I doubt he speaks at the convention - it's full of staunch liberals and wouldn't go over so well. He's very loyal, so it will be interesting to see if he comes out and endorses, or simply quietly roots for Obama. Most people close to him say he fully supports Obama - but whether that support becomes public is another thing.
Hey y'all, I have it on good authority (me and Air America) that John Kerry will announce his support of John McCain at the GOP convention. Book it. They are both vets and all, ya know.
