Colin Kaepernick protests anthem due to treatment of minorities

This is the classic patriotism catch 22. People have fought for the rights of Americans to have free speech and then when someone, in particular a minority of some sort as Chris Jackson comes to mind, exercises that free speech people tell him he's being disrespectful, he should shut up, and be thankful for what he has but of course whether or not they're thankful is immaterial to the validity of their protest.

Ali is a personal hero to many tens of millions around the world because of the life he led but he was hated and despised by most in America when he spoke about societal injustices. He was crucified all over the US when he refused to go to Vietnam. Michael Jordan had an Ali like platform to do something special along those lines but he turned out to be a kiss ass corporate w**** and most all of the athletes that followed him have fallen in line with that. Of course Kaep doesn't risk an Ali type legacy because he has nowhere near that kind of profile but he risks potentially tens of millions of dollars so I give him a ton of credit. He's used a platform he's earned and put his career at risk to make a political statement about something he feels strongly that a lot of higher profile athletes won't touch with a ten foot pole. Hopefully more will step forward.

 

lol here is a typical conservative argument about 'liberal victim hood'- when people like kaepernick (or any other political activist for that matter) protest and use civil disobedience to make a political statement- they're viewed by conservatives as being victims and whiny? dont you have it mixed up? people who engage in protest are doing something that is difficult and not of the norm. one would assume that staying silent would be more of victim hood, similar to a rape victim not admitting to being raped...

he's a member of that african american community, if he feels that he doesnt want to stand for the anthem thats his right... whether or not i agree with that is irrelevant, although to call him a 'victim' is actually not very accurate.

 

I see this as more of a problem that causes other problems effecting AAs today. I know all races have dad abandonment issues but I think it's more prevalent in AA communities. When you look into the poorest black neighborhoods, you'll see single moms living in poverty having more kids and getting more government support - just enough to survive. No dad around to help and support. They in turn do what they've been taught to survive. It's a vicious circle.

 

It worked. Message was delivered.

He will definitely take some heat for it, and it will likely end his career. Just as it did for many NFL'ers who led the strike. Owners don't want it.

I would like to see protesters get together for solutions, but I won't criticize them for it, not everyone can think critically and solve problems, but if nobody gets together, and nobody is inspired, then it was fruitless. People need to meet after these events and walk out of a room with a plan of action. Almost never happens. Yet so simple to try.

The real question is was the juice worth the squeeze. And I don't think so. He left millions on the table that could have made a difference, and he will also leave his voice on the table when he exits the NFL. So to what end. His only hope is that he reached someone who can make a difference. But the moment so fleeting in a short news cycle.

 

The only way this works if many many many other black players join in.

This isn't about love or hate for your country, it's clearly a political protest. I doubt anyone remembers it in a few months other than a soundbite. One, he's not that good of a quarterback and two, no one is going to stick their necks out for him.

Yeah, that's one of the bigger problems in the black community something like 67% of black kids in America are being raised by a single parent. That makes the child a LOT more likely to grow up in poverty and much more likely to become a criminal.

That rate is 25% higher than hispanics, 42% higher than white kids.

Real change has to happen on a cultural level, there's simply nothing that can be done to effectively combat poverty when that many kids are being raised by single parents.....also, if you want to stop black people from being over-represented in prison, you've gotta stop that problem first.

Yup, the reason he did this is probably more so that he can say it was his political stance that got him cut rather than the fact he sucks at football. Pretty calculated IMO.

Not at all, it says that black fathers who stick around are great. I don't doubt that, the problem is that you have such a high percentage of single parent families, not that you have bad fathers. If anything this just shows that real progress could be made if we managed to cut that black single parent family number in half so that it would be closer to the numbers in hispanic or white families.

When you have 2 parent families, you have an opportunity for 2 streams of income which makes it more likely that the family won't be in poverty and maybe, just maybe can generate some wealth over their lifetime. Part of it also would be moving out of the inner cities and moving to a place where homes can be bought instead of just paying rent. You generate no wealth renting. It's basically pissing money away and generating wealth for others.

 

Maybe it's a vicious cycle of over criminilizing young black adults in the first place that has resulted in a statistical great portion of black father's not being their for their kids because many of them are in prison.

it's not good for the career's of celebrities or athlete's to be political... thats why many are so reserved about that topic, they dont want to anger fans etc. they're already under the public microscope being high profile individuals. ali was really hated back then... think mayweather caught heat? ali was vehemently targeted by white conservatives and the government itself... those black athletes who decide to get political are put under a lot of scrutiny, in a disproportionate manner i personally believe.

So if you want to keep trotting out the fallacy that's up to you.
