Howard is a good dude. He gets a bad rep sometimes deservedly but he has done a lot for the Houston community and city in general. Very generous and always giving

Serious question: Is it considered a tax deductible donation if you donate to your spouse's class?

It's tax deductible if they give to a 501(c)(3) organization. If I just give a $1000 check to a teacher to spend on her class, I can't deduct that.

Aren't you actually donating to the school, rather than to the spouse? I'm not an expert (although I pay a lot of taxes, which I'm OK with, believe it or not - and used to do our tax returns myself - that ship sailed long ago), but it should be deductible, in my humble opinion. Our underfunded Texas public schools need all the help they can get after being dumped on for years by the majority party (which will not be named by me here), and that's if the schools aren't simply being ignored of the Texas Legislature, the members in power caring more about rewarding those who donated the most to their campaigns.

Hey, you asked a tax question in the GARM. Duck and cover! :-D-

More than likely a public school is non-profit and a government entity so donating to the school should be deductible, but if you simply write a check to the teacher and hand it to her, that would not be deductible.
