Here's my eye test on Mchale:

I think he must've been a good leader as a player. He is a great leader spiritually, charismatically, and by wisdom of experience for young players. Sort of like a big brother/father figure.
But... he is not a strategist. He can't make decisions and can't create plays to react to changing situations.

He is a great coach during practices, nurturing, and mentoring young players on the fundamentals for them to grow as players.

However, he is not reliable to draw up plays, make decisive substitutions, etc. in order to lead the team to victory during crunch time. Have you ever watched how the players are around him during time outs. Next time you have a copy of a game watch those moments carefully. It's not that they are ignoring him but they do not seem to be fully focused on what he is saying, as if he is not covering essential details. I suspect aside from general ideas and reiterations most of the decisions are being made by the players during the game time. In fact, there have been many allusions to this by players during interviews when they say things like, "offensive system is very player friendly, or it's a reaction system, etc."

For the future I think, this team would be greatly aided by assistant coaches who are strong an active offensive, defensive strategists, assistants can advise on substitutions and plays during time outs.

Mchale is great at what he is great at, as figure of leadership but he is not a good game time leader. I think, there is value to that we just need to fins assistant to shore up his weaknesses.

As a counter example, consider D'antoni, he is great strategist but lacks that reporre with players. Many people say he is just hands off but I think he would never has the personality to have the kind of relationship with young players that a coach like Mchale may have.

Anyway, that's my humble opinion, based only upon what I've observed during this season.

I notice this a lot too. He always takes exception to Morey's strategy and rebuilding this team, and I don't agree with these little potshots he's been taking at him.

Examples: Quote you posted, Cap space can't make a basket rant, etc.

That's because he pretty much nails McHale's background. I agree... excellent post by CH.

As a aside, I sure hope this isn't the next thread picked by "BleedRed" to relieve his boredom and derail a topic.

Personally, I think McHale is the perfect coach for this team. It's easy to get frustrated with young kids. Hell, I've coached youth BBall for 19 years and I had a similar situation to the Minny game yesterday. Getting players to respond is the key and he did a magnificent job of doing that with that TO in the 2nd and follow-up at halftime.

I love these Rockets and I've been watching/rooting for the team since the Calvin, Rudy T and Shark Newlin days.

This team is so fun and entertaining to watch that a new generation of Rocket fans are starting to sprout up. My oldest son has always been a fan, but he's watching the games a O Dark Thirty while overseas. My youngest daughter has watched every game with me and is a big fan.

I for one really appreciate this team from GM to Terrance Jones (who I hope gets some minutes down the line so we can see how he's improved).

After the trades, I've got no more complaints. This team is young, talented and on the rise. We're not a championship team, but we are the MOST EXCITING TEAM in the NBA. Ok, I'm biased, but we score points in gobs and when we play defense we can be stunning (think GS 140 pt outburst and recent game against PHOX we won with tight defense).

The challenge for Morey is finding the next piece or two to make us a championship. However, I would be fine playing next year with this group and continue developing this young guys. The DMo and TRob combo may solve are PF problem. We also still may have something in TJ. The additions of Brooks and Garcia add to our vet experience and versatility. Although Garcia probably won't be back next year, his mentoring is making a difference.

I love having McHale as our coach and Morey as the GM. Whatever happens this year, its been a great ride and I've enjoyed it. It's great being a Rockets fan.

Don't think hes taking potshots. Its more like hes managing the teams and the publics expectations by reminding everyone how young they are.

Less pressure for the team to deal with. I think its smart of McHale to do so.

Glad to hear from someone who's been coaching a young team and in similar situation. I totally agree that we should keep this current roster for a year or two and see how far it can go, and not rush into anything that could make us regret later.

We all know this roster has ultra high potential, just as McHale said "You don't know how good you can be." So why rock the boat by tearing it apart. I am all for adding an all-star PF in the postseason. The key is addition to, not division of, the core of the team.

I think you misconstrued his point. He's not saying that adjustements are overrated, plain and simple. He's saying that in comparison to hard work and effort, adjustments don't matter. To that I completely agree.

The things this team needs to work on are 1) Defense 2) Rebounding 3) Turnovers. Defense and rebounding are all about effort, there are no real adjustments to make in these areas of the game. The scouting reports are completely sufficient to give the players a guide as to what they need to do in the game against the opposing team. There are not many times where a team does something, or a player, that is not in the scouting reports. The players know what they need to do, it's about going out there and doing it. Obviously it's easier said than done, but with effort it can be done.

As for turnovers, it's about becoming more experienced as a team.

As far as I'm truly concerned, the problems with this team are not entirely on McHale. I think the blame should be equally placed on the coaching staff and on the players themselves. Don't worry though, the defense and rebounding issues will be taken care of because, "In Morey, we trust."

You're not talking to me here, right? Because I have never advocated here, or elsewhere, for McHale to be gone, even at the times when I've been most frustrated with, or confused by, him. Always rooting for him.

Heh...Royce is a Viper, isn't he? Seriously, tho, I am truly rooting for the kid to get it together. I know he's annoying as **** a lot of times and his propensity for creating and promptly abandoning baby mamas isn't high on my list of qualities I want to see in a young man (or old one, for that matter) but I do believe he seriously suffers from this anxiety disorder and, having a young nephew dealing with the same thing, I know there are things he's going through and feeling that I will never fully understand. I really hope he makes it. I hope he grows up a little too and learns some sense of responsibility for his own actions but not sure when or if that will happen unfortunately. :(

As for Coach mcHale, I don't even understand why I like him so much. I hated him as a Celtic.

Maybe it's because the relationship between him and his dying daughter was so sweet and loving and I, having lost a dad (who was also very sweet and loving) way too suddenly and way too soon years ago, am a sucker for such things.

Maybe it's this ability that Codman notes that McHale has for "making" you like him.

Maybe it's remembering how Jeremy said, when McHale was away from the team and texting him every day, that McHale was like more than a coach to him, stopping just short of saying that he was like a father, if I remember correctly.

I think at least part of it stems from Jeremy's return to the Garden in December. It's funny, because the whole JLin-Knicks thing seems so far away that it's almost hard to remember what a big deal that was, for Jeremy and for all of his fans, really, especially the NY ones. I was so nervous for him that night. I wanted him to be cheered. And I REALLY wanted him to do well.

And just watching all of the Rockets, their coaches, the players, I got the sense that they all understood just how big this was, and they all wanted Jeremy to do well as much as I did. And then that first play, where Jeremy got the basket and the Garden cheered loudly....that was really lovely. And I saw how these guys were all supporting him, all sharing in his joy, success, whatever. Heck, I'm probably projecting too much but I just really felt that they were such a support for him. I mean, they were a team, trying to win a game in a hostile environment, against a team that was playing particularly well on their home court at the time and that had to be their first concern. But, to me at least, it looked liked they were all going to do whatever they could to make sure that this was also Jeremy's night. That was amazing to me.

All of them - McHale beaming at him, Sampson running out on the court to chest bump Jeremy as he was coming off after a particularly impressive play, Harden trotting 3/4 way down the court to greet him as he came off for the last time, to big cheers - all of them, from top to bottom, were just so involved, so thrilled with Jeremy's success that night. It wasn't until that game was well in hand that I even allowed myself to admit how big a deal that "homecoming" really was. But it was a big deal and...excuse me for getting all girly and sappy and possibly oversentimental....the way the whole Rockets crew was with him that night.....they won my heart forever, I think.

Will McHale do stuff, say stuff, that angers or frustrates me at times? No doubt. But there will never be another time that Jeremy comes back to the Garden for the first time after Linsanity, and from where I sit at least, McHale was a big part of making sure that first time was very special for Jeremy and all of us NY JLin fans. I can't hate him after that. I just can't.

    Sorry.....got carried away.

    Let's beat GSW! :)
