I posted this in the college forum, but few seem to have noticed ryan17wagner's thread, and I think it deserves notice. Move or delete this, if you must, but it is a BIG DEAL! I'm sorry that this is in a forum that doesn't get looked into by most of the members. Guy V. should have been in the Hall ages and ages ago, and deserves trumpets blown in joy for the slight finally being corrected. At least they did it before he died of old age! My father knew Coach Lewis, seeing him socially, and was a great admirer of him, as are any who followed his great teams at UH. He coached several current and future Hall of Famers, whipped the butts of several programs back in the days when UH belonged to no conference, partly because they didn't want to face the Cougars on a regular basis. Congratulations Coach Guy V. Lewis! Overdue, but none more deserving!
Well he got into the college basketball hall of fame, not the basketball hall of fame. Further confirming the fact that the basketball hall of fame is a joke was the fact that Guy V. Lewis wasn't even considered on the last ballot.
Good point. At least he got SOME recognition. Coach Lewis was the mentor of several former Rockets, for which we should be thankful.
It's absolutely ridiculous that GuyV isn't in the Hall. He should have been in a looong time ago. Obviously it goes back to the Final against NC St. Very fishy!
He's never forgiven Guy V. and the Cougars for ending his winning streak. Last weekend, Bob Costas had some old classic interviews (they were great!) with old, classic coaches, some no longer with us, and Wooden was one of them. (still with us, of course) The man, perfectly brilliant, to be sure, is a tap dancer (this interview was from the 80's, I believe). Costas asked him about that loss, and while he didn't say anything bad about Coach Lewis or UH, he managed not to say much that was good, either. One would have thought the loss was a fluke. Ha! He hasn't forgotten or forgiven. I agree with you! Coach Guy V. has a record more than worthy of the Hall, national championship or not. Wooden has enough influence, and savvy, to keep him out, IMO, if he really wanted to.
If that is true then I just lost all respect for John Wooden despite all his titles. That game ushered in the TV era of men's hoops. If Wooden's ego is that big then...wow.(my Mom was at that game) Look at Coach's resume. It easily dwarfs half of the coaches already in there. In addition to the Final Four appearances and the aforementioned game,GuyV played a mammoth role in integrating college hoops.Look at his W-L record. This is a gross injustice that has gone on way to long. I don't know if there is a perception of impropriety out there because of GuyV slowing it down in the second half of the Final......and Coach Wooden is fanning the flames or what, but something is amiss.
