I recall that a post last season summarized many great or promissing players were ruined by RA in his coaching career. Yao will be the next one for sure!

Yeah i must say, DEKE is a much more needed player than players like Von Wafer or Luther Head...Not only does DEKE give Yao someone similar to his size to practice with but DEKE also takes a reasonable amount of minutes of off Yao's shoulders. And its not like Deke is money hungry! He doesnt come at such a high cost!

This is probably in the minority, but I don't have a problem with Yao playing as many minutes as he had so far. The reason why he won't miss as many games this year is because of the minutes he reduced OFF the court. His change in training regiment will make up for (and then some) of the minutes he plays in the game. We need Yao to play as much as he can.

Apparently he is. And so are you and NBAlover. Nobody has a response to him losing 10-15 pounds AND cutting back a ton of practice which more than compensates for a whole extra 5 minutes of game time. He's surely not going to continue playing 38-40 min for the remainder of the season so give it a rest. We have a lot of NBA caliber coaches on this board.

These guys are pros, they've played basketball all their lives. Hell, I remember playing for hours at a time with only water breaks in between full court games to 15. Its what basketball players do growing up. Basketball players could play for 3 to 4 hours straight if they wanted to.

Yao playing a bunch of minutes in a basketball game is not going to hurt him, unless if a freak accident were to happen. Its the weight training, the lack of rest and therapy (sleep, massage, whirlpool, etc..), and taking a few practices off, especially when there are drills and intense cardio involved, which put a lot of pressure on your knees, ankles, and feet at a very fast pace.

Yao has to monitor what he does off the court more than anything. Running and jumping every few seconds, and using strength in the post will not cause injuries. He is pacing himself during a game. He knows when to jog, when to sprint, when to sit back and read the oppositions defense. He isn't playing like a young Hakeem who would run all over the place, doing everything.

Last year, playing a lot of minutes didn't help his case, because he had a stress fracture, which was probably caused by too much work in the offseason and practice, but worsened over the season, because he didn't know, and just practiced the same way and played games the same way.

I think if anything, to keep Yao effective, he needs to play less minutes on the 2nd night of a back to back, if he plays close to 40 minutes on the first night. His body and mind will be worn down throughout a season, just like any NBA player, thats where the excess of minutes could hurt, is just overall game performance. It will have a minimal or no effect on injuries, in comparison to what practices and training will do.

Im worried about those minutes as much as others are.

But then you have to realise how much we need him on the floor. And yes we need a 7 foot back up center......

    Dammit Resign Deke

This is why we NEED Mutombo back! He can pay a few minutes for us when Yao needs a rest and lock down the paint with his great D.

I read it somewhere that RA said limiting Yao's practice for one day short it often serves him better than limiting few minuates of his PT.

RA tries to limit Yao practice before a game. So it let him be more fresh.

Well here is Adelman's response. I imagine that they are also considering reducing Artest's minutes. He's been injury prone himself the last couple of seasons.

[rquoter]Rockets notes: Yao leads centers in minutes

Yao Ming leads all NBA centers in playing time with an average of 39.3 minutes per game, but coach Rick Adelman said it’s not by design.

“It’s only three games into the season,” Adelman said. “It’s not like he’s been playing 40 games at this pace. He’s not going to play (an average of) 39 minutes. I don’t have plans on him doing that. I’d like to see him play about 35 minutes.

“Yao and I have talked about it. In the Dallas game, he really got a rhythm going. I wanted him to get some confidence and get a good feel, so I let him go. You’re not going to see him play that many minutes. Sometimes people talk about that. The difference between 36 and 39 minutes is only three minutes. Over a full season, that could really wear on somebody. Right now, just three games into it, I’m not concerned.”

Yao sat out Sunday’s practice to rest.

Ron Artest leads the Rockets with an average of 40.9 minutes per game, sixth in the league.[/rquoter]

Resign Deke? Now? He can't play 12 minutes a night for the rest of the season so how does that help?

Maybe, as a midseason acquisition, Deke can come in and play 8 or so but other than that...PJ Brown? hahaha...jeez people are upset at 3-0!

Rick is really my second concern. Ask Yao's wife to go easy on him.

Artest is just as fragile as Yao and is getting more minutes. Where is the outcry about that?

    Yeah, that's the point.

I understand sometimes your starts need to play big minutes and I can't argue about Dallas game because probably if Yao had been on the bench, we would have lost. I am ok with that game but once again, there was no reason to keep Yao for the entire 4th quater against Thunder. Maybe Rick wanted him to improve his statictics which wasn't the best but who cares about statistics? I better have Yao averaging 19 pgg and playing 82 games a season and playoffs than Yao averaging 23 ppg and playing 50 games in the season.

We have tough games comming up and Yao will be needed for a lot of minutes. We will see how it works but right now Yao needs more rest.
