No proof of Iran supplying weapons to Taliban - Gates contradicts Burns
Submitted by Netherlands IFP on Fri, 2007-06-15 00:13.Afghanistan | Americas | Asia | Iran | United States | News

There's no proof that Iranian government is supplying weapons to Taliban, US Defense Secretary was forced to admit today, contradicting a statement by State Department official who accused the Iranian government of transferring the weapons.

"I have seen analysis suggesting a considerable flow of weapons and support from Iran," Gates Robert Gates told reporters in Brussels. "And I have not seen information that would directly tie it to approval by the government of Iran."

Defense Secretary's statement comes in stark contrast to accusations made by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns.

“It’s certainly coming from the government of Iran,” Burns said in a June 13 interview on CNN. “It’s coming from the Iranian revolutionary guard corps command, which is a basic unit of the Iranian government.”

Gates also declined to comment on whether NATO has actually intercepted some of these shipments saying " I would rather not go into that."

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack also said on June 13 that there is a “shift” in the policy of the Iranian government “from either benign, neutral, to somewhat helpful in Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of 2001, 2002, to something quite different that does not promote stability in Afghanistan.” adding that the behavior would mark a direct effort by Iran to undermine the Afghan government’s efforts to defeat Taliban insurgents in an effort to extend its authority throughout the country.

But McCormack also quickly pointed out that he could not draw a “hard link … between an Iranian government approved program and the transfer of those arms,” but said it is “hard to believe that they're not.”

Gates also speculated that Iranian government was aware of what is going on.

" That said, as I indicated, I think that it's -- the quantity that we're seeing makes it difficult to believe that the Iranian government doesn't have some indication or some knowledge of it," he said.

And what is a 'win' in Iraq?

We tore power away from the Sunnis, and we have installed a Shiite majority favorable to the Shiite majority in Iran.

We have given terrorists our troops as targets that they wouldn't otherwise have access to.

We have made it possible for the Shiites to engage the Sunnis in civil war, placing our troops in the firing line.

And we will know we won this occupation when________________________.

Could someone help me out and fill in the blank, explain what victory will look like?

Cause I can see how we won Viet Nam and Korean conflicts. That one is there for us to all to see.

I like this part best: Gates also speculated that Iranian government was aware of what is going on.

" That said, as I indicated, I think that it's -- the quantity that we're seeing makes it difficult to believe that the Iranian government doesn't have some indication or some knowledge of it," he said.

    more to come, i'm sure...

you got me! as i previously said, i never get on others for spelling errors b/c i make my share, but if you are going to point mine out it's pretty easy to do the same for you. either way, it's pretty weak to try and avoid the substance of the post and just play spell police.

    did you mean "their" part

did you mean "its part"? you dont need the apostrophe when "it" is a possessive pronoun - your spelling would imply "it is".

i think you mean "your other comments are just about non-sensical". you were speaking of a plural so you dont say "is".

    dont you mean "yourself"?

    see above

    dont you mean "grammar"

i dont know "hold" it seems either!

Nice try jomama, but you sincerely didn't know how to spell the word "lose". It wasn't a typo, it was a shortfall in knowledge.

One thing that has hurt is Malaki has not done what he needed to do...I was reading the tennessean paper and they touched on this...

The unfortunate thing is we have to be met halfway to succeed. It hasn't happened, and if left to continue it could go for years...

I agree that is not what anyone wants. I don't...I say let's wait till september to see how the Iraqi people can catch up to the halfway point...If that isn't happening, then we did what we could, and it's time to think of how to leave and to think of what could happen and how to engage this properly with the idea of undermining the tactics of terror and those who contribute to it...(Iran)

It's clear for all to see that war supporters support more of our troops dying.

    Hope I spelled everything right.

Malaki is a smoke screen. I can see your concern. Please research the issue on a deeper level.

The Sunnis represent much of the Arabs in Syria and surrounding nations, also Saudis Arabia.

The Shiites primarily have radical terrorist groups operational such as Hezbela in Lebanon, etc.

The Shiites control Iran and now Iraq. This provides for de-stabilaztion of the region. We are supporting the Shiites because they will fight with us. The Iraqi security forces we are training are Shiite.

We are totally in a no win situation as far as the conflict between Shiite and Sunni.

We are there for other reasons.

I don't think we need to go back and research this war between the Shiite radicals and the Sunni, but if we don't understand it we can't possibly see that our reason for the invasion and occupation has nothing to do with WMD, nuclear weapons or terrorism. It is all about power in the region and the economics affected thereby.

Again we are putting our soldiers in harms way for rich people who hate America- sweet :(
